Two ways to remove AQ131A?

My boat is a 1987 Capri 2150 with AQ131A and 275 outdrive. Am I correct in assuming that there are two methods for removing the engine (after disconnecting all connections inside)

1. By removing the transmission and bellows which apparently then provides access to the flywheel cover bolts. Support engine and remove bolts, pull the engine forward and up and out.

2. Don't touch the outdrive. Loosen the flywheel bolts from inside only. Support engine an remove bolts, pull the engine forward and up and out.

I really don't want to get into my outdrive if I don't have too so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

#1 Is the correct method.

Also gives you a chance to service/replace the intermediate shaft bearing, U-joints, and bellows. Don't need to pull the whole drive, only the upper gear box.

If you try #2 and it doesn't go smoothly, you'll wish you'd pulled the gearbox because you'll have to anyway. It's a lot easier working from outside the boat than inside.

Point taken. Need to ask about the photo. I can't quite tell what I'm seeing. Is that a normal everyday engine puller that's been placed on the floor of your boat? Or is it outside the boat and I just can't see it?

That's the easy way...the alternative is to dimantle the engin piece-by-piece in the engine bay. Fiddly but can be done.

I had considered doing it that way, but I'm too damned old to be leaning over that engine for hours at a time. Makes me cranky. But, you're right, it is an alternative.
