<<ORDINARY light bulbs are to be banned across the European Union within two years in the fight against climate change.>>

<<The energy that would be saved in the UK is equivalent to one medium-sized power station.>>

Re: Two years to change EU light bulbs

Recently read an article where legislation was proposed to do this in California.
The experts pushing for this claimed it could cut California's electricity usage by 0.5 - 1.5 percent. But these same experts declined to answer questions on the manufacture and disposal, or recycling costs of the new light "bulbs."

Wow, I'm excited.

Much more could be saved by just turning off un-necessary lights.

Yah Roscoe, I think ol' BB (BoatBuoy), has some background in the field. Seems he stated the entire lighting consumption as a percent of the total was near that range. Makes ya wonder what the real agenda is doesn't it? JR 8)8) ps Maybe my jokin' with Tree isn't a joke. :$:%

There will have to be a big improvement in the light output of those energy saving bulbs before I use them, I would have to burn 3 times as many to get enough light to work by.

I'm starting to get a bit pi$$ed off with our government telling me what I can and can't do/say.

I like the idea of governments actively taking steps to lower their power bills. This will probably cause a lot of research into more energy efficient lamps and in a little while it will probably be cheaper to buy cfl than it is today.
In spite of our resistance to people telling us what to do,we all agree that we would love to pollute less.
The whole world did a similar thing when we changed from ozone destroying refrigerants (r12) to R134 and the spray cans that no longer destroy the ozone layer.
My feeling is that we have reached a watershed in our attitude towards energy and pollution.

Don't expect the bulbs to get better or the price to get cheaper.
Now that they are mandated, there is no incentive to improve them.
And no reason to drop the price.

Don and I get along, just different opinons on some things.

And I can understand the aresols and r12, was that not a fact that all, or most in the sceintific community agreed on (I can't recall much about it)? Unlike global warming where there is a fast difference in opinions on how much humankind in contributing to it.

I'll keep my old light bulbs, thank you very much.

OMR, should I bring some of the old bulbs with me to the island? :$

They aren't mandated anywhere yet, and even when they are in a few places the United States won't be. (I don't really consider CA a state anymore)

They are getting considerably better all the time. Early fluorescents were less than 50 lumens/watt, while newer ones can be up to 70 lumens/watt. More importantly, fluorescents are quickly becoming outdated and in 10 years I don't think anybody will be selling them anymore. LED and HID lights are already way more efficient, and provide much better light, but they're still too expensive for most normal uses.

I was checking out some of the new fluorescents at Lowe's the other day. On the back of the package it warned folks to dispose of properly as the bulb contains Mercury.

What's with that?

Just like it sounds, they're made with mercury, which is bad. Kinda eliminates the environmental "savings", huh? ;)
