TX heat will push unvented gas cans gas past valves. 3 gallons in a 2nd tank was gone today with all indications it was pushed passed the coupling and out the bilge drain while in storage. jow

You sure it's in the bildge? The air/fuel wouldn't expand that much to push 3 gal. out of the tank.
I went fishing andwas positive I had 18 gal in a spare tank.I think what happened was the Ethanol ate my hose from the tank to the manual valve, then it started leaking and siphoned off all 18 gal.
Thank G that I had Tow Boat Insurance. We ran out of gas 14 mi out in the ocean.Or maybe I used it.Old and suffering from CRS.J

Re: TX heat will push unvented gas cans gas past valves.

This is the 2nd time this has happened.

1. The first I could understand. I left a quick-coupling and a piece of hose on a tank while changing fuel lines. About a gallon was pushed passer the open valve before I spotted the problem.

2. The second waste of gas was past a closed valve (with signs the gas was pushed out) and plenty pressure was released when I vented the can.

3. I usually will not leave the cans vented fearing moisture. This has taught me a lesson. Will the open vents allow moisture to enter the cans? Thanks, jow

Re: TX heat will push unvented gas cans gas past valves.

This was during 90 + degree weather a few weeks ago. This had never happened that I know of. BUT! In 100 degree weather + once in the mid 80s we heard hissing noises while driving and pulled over to find the truck and boat's tank's caps were releasing pressure. My concern is a release system, which I feel my next 1993 Explorer had. It world flood when I over filled it in 100 degree weather (after a fill-up and coasting to my 1st stop). I have an 07 V6 4Runner after 15 years with my Explorer that my boat and I are having trouble adjusting to (towing and etc. due to wanting to continue with a solid rear axle). The Explorer knew its way home. LOL. jow
