Type "C" or something equivalent

Hello folks, I've read several different threads on this matter regarding hypoid oil for low end EJ outboard's, all I'm trying to find out, is what would work (in todays) lubricants' that will provide the same level of protection that my low end requires.

I have a 1968 Evinrude 40 hp (manual shift) 'big twin"
When the low end oil was drained, it had the consistency of ATF and (NOT) the 80w or 90w oil.
something I can pick up at Walmart or NAPA or O'reilly's etc. possibly?

OMC Type C gear oil necessary?

I inherited a 1973 Johnson 9.5 and want to change the gear case oil before the season. There is a sticker on the motor that states "Use OMC Type C gear oil". I've read this type of oil is necessary for electric shift models but is this oil necessary on this little fella? I wasn't able to find...

Type C was for electric shift.-----But for a few years it was used on all OMC models.----And listed on those stickers.-----Use any quality outboard gear oil in that 1968 big twin.

Well thank you for the info, should i stay away from 80w or 90w? or does it matters as long as it is good quality outboard gear oil

That motor is not fussy. 80-90 outboard gear oil is fine. Probably even better than the type c, actually.
