1990 Johnson 175 HP - what type of oil do I put in the lower unit. The manual says HI VIS gear oil. Not sure what that is, and not listed that way in automotive stores. Can someone tell me the specific weight and type. There are not many dealers where I live, Walmarts and autoparts stores are the most likely sources.

I read this forum regularly, great site with so much valuable info. Thanks to the many that contribute.

The Hi-Vis gear lube was OMC's name for their brand. Its no longer made.
I have used the Johnson-Evinrude lower gear lube and the Pennzoil..
Either way will work.

I did see numerous gear oil that met the specs however none of it marine grade. Remember reading something about the marine grade not breaking down as easily if water seeps into the lower unit. Thanks for your responses, now I know exactly what to look for.
