Hmm... Oil.

Well. This question seems to be asked just about every day!

The Mercruiser answer is below.

NOTE: The use of non-detergent oils, multi-viscosity oils (other than as specified), non-FC-W rated synthetic oils, low quality oils or oils that contain solid additives are specifically not recommended.

This crankcase oil recommendation supersedes all previously printed crankcase oil recommendations for MerCruiser gasoline engines. The reason for this change is to include the newer engine oils that are now available in the recommendation.

If you don't want to use what Mercruiser suggests, use anything you want. Marine engines don't seem to die from using any modern oil brand or type.

I will suggest that you do not use ANY after market snake oil additives though. They're great for the people that sell them......but, IMHO, not so great for the people that buy them....

15W40 is not advised by Mercruiser, and cannot be any marine certification grade that I know of.

Oil additives are not required when the oil specs are adherred to, and can do more harm than good.

I would look at the chart that Rick posted, and go from there!

Happy boating!
