Welcome to iboats, I've seen people use all kinds of paints on there boats with success including regular rustoleum. My boat was sprayed by the previous owner with automotive paint and it would have been great if it wasn't running all over the place. If you want to play it safe, get yourself some Marine rustoleum, it's only about $15 a quart if your trying not to spend a lot, some Lowes locations carry it.

Re: type of paint

I have used automotive paint many times on fiberglass and it works well, just be aware of the danger of the 2 part paints. They are very toxic and need good ventilation when sprayed.
P rep the surface well, clean all silicone residue BEFORE sanding or you will just rub it in. Remember preperation is 80% or the paint job. Almost any good paint will work well on a good surface.
Also if you intend to spray the paint use a gravity gun in humid weather to avoid blushing.
The worst that can happen is a do-over and you don't have to tell anyone about that.
