so, finally it is that time of year again! i have only had my boat for 18 months and i don't know the extent of the lack of maintainance from the previous owner. the water pump impellor was replaced last year and this, but i need to lube my u-joints and bellows and..?. which involves pulling the rest of the outboard. i am not too confident to say the least. i do have the manual. do i need to mess with the reverse or fwd cables? i would like to disturb as little as possible. and how hard is it to do an alignment? i have a tool on hold, just need to feel more comfortable. please help. thx! pete in norcal.

First thing would maybe get a service manual. It explains all that and more if your going to wrench on it. Good luck

What drive are ya talkin' about, Sparky?.....
If it is a Merc Alpha style, the procedure is relatively easy....
Put the helm in foreward, remove the aft bolts on the trim rams, remove the six bolts that hold the drive on & voila!......:)

First off, it's an outdrive, not an outboard, and you won't need to lubricate the bellows, it's just rubber, you do however need to remove the drive and check the engine alignment, lube the ujoints, and gimbal bearin and check that they are smooth operating. Also make sure there is no water in there. That's why you should pull the drive during winterization, so if water was in there, it doesn't sit all winter and corrode away the transom shield.

Assuming you working on your invader with an Alpha, here is the link to the service manual. Just click on the section letter you want on the outline page.
