U-Joint removal in Alpha One

I have my upper drive off of my 1986 alpha one. I am having trouble getting the u joints removed for replacement. I have taken off c clips but how can I get the u joint out of the spider? My book doesn't do a good job showing/explaining. Any suggestions?

Without a u-joint press, you can ussally tap on the yokes to remove the caps do not tap on the caps as they will flair and give you troubles

Best way is to use a press and press them out. You could use a socket and knock them out if thats the last resort.

A correct size socket and a large c clamp will also work. If I remeber correctly you need to notch the socket for the u-joint right next to the upper assembly.

Assuming it's the same as taking off automotive ujoints, you can get a rent a kit from Oreilly or another auto parts store that's also used for removing ball joints. Is there clearance for the bearing caps to come off the short yoke? I remove the complete u-joint shaft from the upper drive when I replace the u-joints.Good time to replace the yoke oil seal too.<br /><br />DHP

No,.... There's a Clearence Issue with the Big Castle Nut,........<br />You'll have to Grind just 1 of the tabs down to get the room,......<br />Then you can drive 1 cap off,.. Rotate the shaft 180*s,+ drive the other side off.....<br />Do Worry,...... It's still usable with 1 of the tabs Trimmed......<br />Just Don't Remove anymore than absolutely Nessessary,............

C-clamp and socket(s) works great--I didn't have to grind anything when I did it.
