I was looking at my U-joints on my MC-1 drive getting ready to install new joints I bought. It looks like the caps on the joint closest to the drive are going to hit the ears on the large bearing shaft assembly "nut" thingy lol. Looks like they are going to hit by a 1/8" is this normal if so how to get the caps past the ears? thanks

Grind the points off a couple of the ears on retainer so the ujoints will clear.

When I change ujoints, I remove the shaft and inspect the seal surface on the yoke. I really don't like banging on the ujoints while supported by the bearings.
The book only shows changing the ujoints with the shaft removed.

are the ujoints rusty? if so, yer gonna want to remove the yoke and brg. assy. for that ya need that big brg. retainer wrench. ya wanna go look at the ft. seal + the drive gear yoke seal area. if rusty, the yoke needs replacement. if no rust. count yer blessings i guess and get the grinder out.......

Hey Zig, No that part looks ok when i do the pressure/vacume test i'll know. A little rusty water came out of the joint when i tried greasing it. So yeah got some new ones. Thanks Zig

to me that's the way to do it. nice and easy when removed.

I really don't like banging on the ujoints while supported by the bearings.
banging? i used one of them chineeze :( ujoint presses from harbor frieght along with this http://www.iboats.com/U_Joint_Adapt...5076778--**********.700776284--view_id.271201
made easy work of ujoint replacment.

A little rusty water came out of the joint when i tried greasing it.
to me, that'd indicate water intrusion at some point and i'd wanna go see the yoke seal and yoke....... on mine, this is what made me wanna go see.

this yoke got replaced.... it held under a pressure test prior to disassembly too.

You can't get a ujoint press in there for the caps on the drive yoke with the shaft in the bearings.

...of the ujoints i've done. banging has always caused me grief in one way or the other. so for my mercruiser i thought i'd see if i could do it easier with the press... sure does work good and is much easier.. but yep. gotta get rid of the brg. retainer nut to get a press in there. no other way around it w/o too much grinding on the retainer nut i thought....

Re: U-joints MC-1

I have a nifty ball jount tool that does u-joints also so i'll see if it works. Even if the last one needs to be tapped out, I dont really want to disturb the gear lash and disaasemble the housing if i dont have to.

supposedly it don't disturb gear lash. the shims stay the same as long as ya reuse yer old brgs. our 1:65 gears are unique too in they have hash marks on them to line them up. ya can't miss putting it back the way it was to start with. assumin their old style gears. ya do have to disassemble the brg. assy though. and that's a drag. like having to have a ft lb torque wrench up to 80 or + ft lbs. or a dial indicator style in. lb torque wrench if the gears are new style. side benifit is ya get to inspect the brg.s while yer there.... any way ya look at it. more work for sure...

if it's rain water i reckon ya'll be ok it think too. as long as it wasn't water intrusion while installed.

Thanks Zig, i'm gonna do a pressure test first even if its weeping oil a little i'm puting the other seal in to keep water out it may be ok for this season. Depend how the test goes. If it's a gusher then yeah "more work"
