Ok here goes. I bought a new to me 1993 Mariah 212 a few weeks ago. Just had a chance to get it in the water for a test this past weekend. Top speed is only 43 mph gps at about 4200 rpm. I am thinking a boat like this with a 350 mag shout be around 50ish. Maybe I am mistaken...my older 79 Searay 195 heavier and deeper v hull with the stock 350 and an aluminum 19 inch prop will get close to 50 at 4900rmp with a light load. The Mariah has a Revolution 4 stainless prop on it and the blades look very aggressive to me. I want to take it off to try the prop from the Searay but it has a locking nut and no key for it. What have you guys done to get the locking nut off?? Also the boat has a hydrofoil on the leg that I will take off at the same time. From what I have read on here they do more harm than good. Will wait to see what everybody has to say before I get out the hammer and chisel.

Thanks for your time....Doug

Can you get ViceGrips on it? I removed one by smashing it with vicegrips and turnng it off. It depends what type of locking nut it is, and if you can get some type of tool on it.

Possibly one of those McGard locking prop nuts? If so, rotating collar prevents easy removal, but I suppose you could grind the collar off and attack it with a vice grips or something? Maybe the local shops have easier ways, like a set of keys or something? This situation has to come up now and again so the mechanics probalby know the tricks.

thanks for the reply....yes it is the McGard type with the rotating collar. We only have one small marine shop in town and they told me they have not ever seen one or sold one let alone try to get one off. Looks like its time to get the tools out when it stops raining again.

That's what I had on my motor mount. Guess the PO was worried someone would steal the motor. That's the one I crunched with the vice grips, around the collar, but it was easy to get to. Do you have a welder? Run a bead across it so it doesnt turn, then maybe snatch it off with needle-nose vice grips. Just a thought.
