I have an '87 3.0 & I have no idea how many hrs. are on it. Owned it since '92. I've always used straight 30w oil. Does anyone have an opinion on switching to a synthetic? Should I even bother with an engine of this vintage, or should I leave well enough alone? The engine runs great, doesn't use or burn a drop, although on full warm up I do hear some lifter noise.

if it was me, I would leave good enough alone, try adding some seaform additive to your oil, it might loosen up and clean those noisy lifters:)

I don't know about the Seafoam. I don't like the idea of adding any addiditives. But, thanx for the suggestion.

Uh....I hate to differ. but DON'T put additives in your oil! Especially Seafoam or any other snake oil!

NO MANUFACTURER recommends using anything in the oil. (dealers do from time to time, but what do they know?)

Just change it according to Merc/Volvo recommendations. If you have a noisy lifter either adjust it or replace it!

Read HERE Too!

Someone PLEASE make this stuff a sticky?

Also, stay with what type of oil you've been using... Don't switch to synthetic if you've been using dyno oil for a while.

Been there on two different older engines... Both began oil leaks shortly after. From what I gather, since the syn oil is a little slicker (maybe?), its cleaning out the little spaces and partical collecting cracks in and around the gaskets... thus causing a leak...
