UH-OH....water in transom

Just purchased a used 99 GS 160 from a Glastron dealer.
I have a concern that may or may not be a problem.
While installing a depth finder tranducer I had to drill two small holes about two inches up from the bottom of the transom, the holes are one inch deep.
Although the drain plug was out and floor dry I had streams of water shooting out the holes.I then put a vacuum pump to the holes for eight hours to remove all the moisture and then put sealed screws into the holes.
After using the boat the water was back.
Iam concerned that this trapped water will rot my transom wood if it hasn't already.
Any insights/ideas?.....thanks,Mike

Yes the water is between the transom walls. It was on the dealer's lot for several months with water in the bottom.I'm hoping that this is when it migrated into the transom and not the previous 8 seasons...Mike.

Yea, you have a problem there. The transom should be watertight. If there is water getting in there, you will have if you don't already, transom rot!

Return to dealer and get your money back ASAP! At the very least negotiate some sort of deal.

Once water gets into the wood core it will never dry out as it does not have enough exposure to drying air. You can vacume it, let it sit for days with a heat lamp and it will still be wet inside. If the water that came out had any color to it, like brown or black, you already have rot.

Rot is a fungus and once started it must be killed or removed.

Yep, better talk to the seller. I hope it's a dealer, & not a private seller. Redoing that transom is a major undertaking. If there's water in the transom, I'd also be concerned about the stringers. Good luck.

Re: UH-OH....water in transom

Guys, just a follow-up on what I heard from both my dealer and Glastron tech support,I bounced off of both to verify what they were telling me.
My particular boat has fiberglass stringers and the transom is resin impregnated inside and out.
They say that the water can be removed, the leak found and sealed and it will be fine.My dealer even offered to do it.
I made a SS fitting which will be permanently mounted at the bottom of the transom, this will allow me to connect an A/C vacuum pump which can remove moisture from just about anything.Later I will apply about 5 lbs. pressure at that point and snoop(soapy water) for the leak....Mike.

Not sure I buy that at all. But, the dealer knows more than all the guys on this forum right? Have you looked in the project boat section? Might want to familiarize yourself with it........

If the dealer says he will do it...perhaps start there.
However I would ask for an extended warranty ('goodwill' or otherwise) to ensure that his repair holds and gets you through a reasonable period with no further issues of this kind and no apparent transom problems.
If he is right in what he says he should have no problem with this...why would he?
See what he says and measure his response to 'gut-check' your confidence in him.

Just because the transon is "resin impregnated", doeesn't mean the wood can't rot. It happens all the time when moisture finds it's way past the glass. As far as the stringers, there probably coated with glass. Same story. In my opinion the dealer is giving you a line of b.s. I would get another opinion from a different shop.

I agree with the others on this. You may be OK for a couple of years with the dealer fix, but will he still honor the agreement then when you start to notice more trouble? Be wary about this offer.
