If I remove the u-joint from the drive (using the special tool) but do not disturb the vertical drive shaft do I need to do all the drive shaft shimming? I cant really tell from the manual when the shimming is required. 1983 MR drive
being an `83 and IF the gearset has never been updated then remove the nut ,slide the gear with the bearings off the shaft and R/R the U joints. There is no rolling torque to be concerned about just tighten the nut to spec
If all you need to do is replace the unis, there is no need to pull the shaft out. Just turn it so the bearing cup pushes out between the lugs of the cover nut... That's how it was designed....
looking at the rust on the U joints I can see why. Use the spanner wrench ,some penetrating oil some heat.
If it still wont budge, hit the spanner with a large hammer to get it free
