In the early 70's a friend of mine and some of his friends went to a swimming hole he with which he was unfamiliar. They all ran down a small dock and jumped in the water while he was parking his truck. To make him think the water was deeper than it was, they were standing on their knees with the water up to their necks. When he came down, they told him to jump in. He didn't jump, he dove. Head first. He broke his neck and came up in the classic "dead man's float" face down. His "friends" thought he was joking and proceeded to kepp pushing him underwater until they realised he was really hurt. They carried him to his truck and put him in the back, drove down the bumpy dirt road, and took him to the hospital.

The last time I saw him, he was in a wheelchair with a metal cage which rested on his shoulders and screwed to his head.

Some joke, huh? :(

A freind I went to school with, jumped off woodson bridge and landed on the old piling. He made it and is too in a wheelchair.. Not a good way to spend the rest of your days..
That is really sad...
I have come quite close of slipping off rocks and sliding over 100 ft trying to get to that one hole telling myself there is a nice big trout waiting for me.. Dumb,dumb.. Now I take a rope, just incase..

There used to be a man near where I grew up, he lived in Steele City Nebraska. He dove off of a bridge into the little blue river when it was flooded. It would have been deep enough I think, but he hit a half submerged log. Paralized from the neck down. He is now a great artist, painting with his mouth. Last I knew anyway, he was very well known selling paintings for top dollars.

2 summers ago 2 morons dove off of the face of the dam here into the spillway. About 100 feet maybe a little more. It was low water, and the cement baffles in the spillway only a few inches below water line. Plus the slope of the spillway out of the gates is longer than it looks, gates were closed.
1 made it 1 didn't.
Almost really tragic, had to shut down the lower gates to find the body. This shut off the river flow into the republican river, the day before the republican river canoe race. Would have really been bad if the canoe race would have been interrupted!

A lot of times, life's lesson's are cheap. (Whoa, that was a close one! I won't do that again!) But others come at great cost, and being paralized from the neck down is about as costly as it gets. I know most of the SHT I've read here are funny from an on-looker's point of view and most are just people doing stupid things that cause no loss of limbs or life. I can't help but wonder "What were these people thinking," when they tricked him into believing the water was deeper than it actually was? I guess they thought he would jump in feet first and be startled when he hit bottom. Whatever they were thinking then, I hope they are still thinking about the results.

Dan

That is bad. If you want to be stupid and kill yourself, well thanks for cleaning up the gene pool, but I hate to see when one's stupidity hurts another. Two cases from the lake mead incident report for labor day.

http://www.nationalparksgallery.com/park-news/1173

September 4th – A 14-year-old girl from Bullhead City who was being towed behind a boat was hit in the head by a jet skier estimated to be traveling at 40 mph. She remained unconscious on scene. She was intubated and airlifted to University Medical Center, where she later died as a result of her injuries. The operator of the jet ski was arrested for boating under the influence and transported to Laughlin. September 4th – A 45-year-old man who had consumed 18 beers climbed up a cliff and jumped off. He landed on the outdrive of a vessel and sustained multiple propeller cuts to both arms and legs, including a laceration over the femoral hip/groin area. A visitor on scene placed a tourniquet on the wound using a bungee cord and metal barbeque tongs. The man was air lifted to University Medical Center.
