not saying I'm superstitious or anything (well maybe a little) but I've heard its bad luck to either remove a name on a boat or change it.

my little 16' bowrider was, for god only knows what reason, named "big time III" by a previous owner. I'm assuming it was part of a set of boats the original owner must have owned as I'm the third owner.

I just dont like it is all lol.

I wanna at least remove the decals off the back. will I get struck by lightning from the boat gods or something?

Probably... there is a thread in here somewhere about the procedures of renaming a boat if your superstitious.

Superstition only has an effect if you believe it. I believe other's voodoo has no effect on me.

Stackz,

It's as easy as ripping off the old and replacing with the new. If you are worried, then have a small sacrafical ceremony when you do it. What you sacrifce is up to you but I suggest an old unusable fishing rod on the low end to the sky's the limit on the high end. Wife and children are not up for consideration. :D

Don't let superstitions affect your naming of the boat. If the old name is on in vinyl, take a heat gun and rip it off, then gently apply your new name's graphics. That's about as ceremonious as it should get. Other than enjoying an adult beverage after you're finished while sitting back and admiring your work.

I dont beleive in superstitions either, but after last summer, I held a ceremony on the water. We have had no issues since, at least none that kept us off the water. We worked on one problem after another all summer last year, until the ceremony. Then no problems.

Of course, prior to that we had several years of trouble free boating in our $2100 01 Tahoe Q7, sooooooooooooo...............................................................

Well, the ceremony involves burning socks that have been worn for at least a month straight and copious amounts of imbibed rum. So: You decide if it is worth taking a chance on angering Neptune.

I renamed a boat one time for a previous bossman. No ceremony. We put over 1400 hrs in under 8 years, spent alot of our time in the Bermuda Triangle. That boat never let us down. She was a sweet one.

Take off the old name. Put on new name. Say, i know christen this "___insert new boat name here___", pour a little champagne in the water, drink the rest, and enjoy your new boat!

Oh and just so you know. It is just bad luck owning a boat in general, so why take the chance? LOL

I guess I'm just a traditionalist. I like the idea of maintaining traditions that have been around for (at least) hundreds of years.

Does it matter? Of course not- but anytime I can participate in a ceremony involving cool speeches, entreaties to Poseidin, good quality alcohol and a group of my closest friends... well, I think there's something wrong with anybody who wouldn't want to do that.

Ever hear of the Duc de Duras or the Horst Wessel?

Both ended up doing pretty well when renamed to Bonhomme Richard and USCG Eagle.

Lol....nothing more needs to be said.

The name on my jet boat used to be "Hard Core".....but I've found that to be inappropriate for our boat as it's a family use boat so the name has been removed. My issue is this, the gel coat has faded around where the letters once were so I can see a slight shadow of the prior name. I've buffed, compounded and waxed with minimal results.
