Un-winterized motor

I just bought a 14' Starcraft with a 1977 Evinrude 25hp motor model 25752. The guy I bought it from did not winterize it. When I asked him about winterizing it he just said he drained the gas. What should I do before starting it this spring?

From reading on these forums I am guessing I need to change the L/U oil, and possibly the impeller. What else? Or do I just do those things and prime it and turn it over?

I thought this guy would have known to winterize it considering he rebuilt the carbs and did some other work like installing a new coil and fuel pump, as well as rewiring the whole boat etc...

Thanks guys! I am learning a lot so far on this site. I am very anxious to get this thing in the water. Too bad we are having an extremely cold winter and spring seems so far away here in central Iowa.

Re: Un-winterized motor

winterizing outboards is not that critical, as and inboard or I/O. as long as the motor was stored in an upright condition, no worries, of freezing. the carbs could be gummed up possibly. if you don't know when the water pump was serviced, that is a must. then start it, and see how it runs.
