Yep, grinder. A metal cutting or masonry blade will cut through the glass, be careful and go slow or you'll join the "I put a gash in my hull while using a power tool" club... or even worse, the "I put a gash in my (insert body part here)" club.

Grinder, backup pad, resin coated discs 24 or 36 grit. You MUST wear a Good Respirator (Full Face preferred). This thing will make dust like you can't believe. You should wear a hooded Tyvek suit and coat yourself with Baby Powder before suiting up. It will help keep down the itch but... YOu will Still itch!!!!:D

Thanks guys. I really appreciate all the help. I'm enjoying the demo. I've convinced myself I can take the cap off. Never done anything like this before but decided to go for it. Just a little intimidated by the idea of taking the top of my boat off. But I can't get to the bow because it's too cramped. I've read up about keeping the hull in place so I'm going to use ratchet straps and hold the hull in place while taking the cap off and them keeping the straps on while putting in the new stringers and deck so the cap will go back on with no problems. Not sure I'll get that done before the snow flies here in Illinois.

Yep, take plenty of measurements NOW and record them. You want the deck and stringers to be precise. Once the deck its installed the sides of the hull won't flex so good and they have to be back in the same configuration for the cap to go back on.;)
