I have a 2005 9.9 Yamaha on a 14ft V hull aluminum boat. It tops out at 14mph and I feel like that’s just slower than it should be. I have watched YouTube videos where they say you should go about 20mph. What could be the problem or is that just the top speed?

20mph out of a 9.9?, i would think 14mph on a 14ft v botom would be good. maybe look into a different prop?

Complete Motor model #, prop being used, weight being pushed, along with the WOT RPM is needed

If the current prop was factory delivered with said motor it's a medium pitched one, only good for breaking in the motor, once done must install a prop that will make the motor to run at least middle to max wot rpm range although the latter it's much preferred pushing whichever the boat size is. For that venture need to buy an induction tach to know the current max wot rpm achieved on flat calm water cond as loaded, once there can play with different props and their pitches all you want...

The stock prop is 3x 9 1/4 x 9..... check that then check your max timing and throttle that its opening all the way, max throttle is 30 degrees BTDC

Idk how heavy is your boat? I was getting 22mph on my 14 foot 150lb princecraft with a 20lb anchor, gas and fishing gear with my 9.9 yammy, until i converted it to a 15hp now im getting 25mph and dont lose a pile of speed with more weight in the boat 😍😍 22mph with me and my buddy, and full cooler with fishing gear
