A customer of mine has 4x8 sheets of 1/8" industrial plastic, usually used for chutes to remove old roofing material when re-roofing. This is heavy duty material and it's free. What are your thoughts on using it for underskinning?

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I would recommend using a button head rivet to install it. Maybe a fender washer would help too, to support it.

Try it, what do you have to lose???????

AS long as it is pretty stout plastic it should work, as Kitchen said I think it is all in how you attach it to the boat.

Even if it doesn't work all you lost is some time.

I would be inclined to use strips of aluminum bar (3/16 x 1) or some such lengthwise of the toon under the plastic sheet.
Run your screws through that and the plastic into the crossmembers.
