Understanding the charging system

I have a 2002 Yamaha 2 stroke (115). I was having a conversation with my buddy about the charging system and quite frankly, I dont know much about it. I know my boat has a stater. Does that just keep the motor powered, thus the battery is only needed to start it and it runs on its own? Or does it provide charge back to the battery, keeping it charged as well (keeping the battery supplied with eletricity to power other electronics)?

Charging system is very simple. The stator also has windings that feed AC to a rectifier/regulator which keeps the battery charged.

Bill,
Thank you for the quick reply. So when the motor is running and the voltmeter is reading 12-14 volts, its charging the system?

Yes. The older motors you wouldn't see a whole lot of voltage increase until the RPMs approached 2000 RPMs. Sounds like yours is working fine.
