Does anyone have any suggestions for really cheap alternatives underwater camera set-ups?

I am not paying $1000 to house my $800 camera underwater! I have a Canon Rebel-Digital and another very small digital camera (that I could put in a bag or something??). Any help is appreciated as the wife has placed a moratorium on spending for the boat.

Re: Underwater Photography

There are universal housings which are generally plastic bags for sale all over the Internet. I wouldn't take a camera that I was too worried about damage down below, nor would I take it too deep.

As a long time diver and underwater photographer I would spend the money on the right housing. Shop around on dive sites deals can be found. Nothing more depressing than coming up from a dive with really cool pictures and find out your camera housing leaked and you have nothing.

I have a canon a540 and a underwater housing that I bought on ebay(new).Of course you will loose colors below 15' even in the bright of day with out a strobe, but it takes great pictures, does not leak and I only have $250 invested. The housing is hard plastic(polyurethane?)its not stamped canon but some eastern language.I believe it will fit all canon a-series cameras.I also wish now I waited because canon now offers a a-series with motion stabilization(a560 or a570 I think)which I would find useful,I've seen them for $150 to $200.As you probably know moving up to strobes gets very expensive plus with power pak is very bulky.I hope this helps!

I use a Fuji F10 with a housing made for the camera. I bought both for $500 a year and a half ago. You can get the camera for $120 now on ebay and I see housings listed for $130. The nice thing about this point and shoot is it's high ISO ratings so the flash isn't as important - good thing because it isn't very strong anyway. The only other downside is that it doesn't have a connection for a strobe.

I have the Canon A70 and underwater housing. Great camera and housing. It is a couple of year old camera, but check the Canon website they have housings for many of there cameras. I also am not going to take my Rebel under water.
