uneven compression

If 3 cyl on on side of the motor are 90lbs and 3 cyl are 70 on the other would you think there is a head gasket leak or just worn. it is a 1983 150hp evinrude, would it run ok oris it time to rebuild

thanks
John

Re: uneven compression

And how long has this engine been sitting idle? Sorry 'bout all the questions here, but they are important.

Re: uneven compression

thanks guys
i do not know if the motor runs the vro pump was leaking gas all over, so i had to stop untill i get a new pump or go to the old style fule pumps.the guy i got the motor from said it sat a couple of years. but it looks like it was taken care of. would decarbing it bring up the compression? or should i first see if it starts it has good spark.
John

Mr. G - Don't be in to big a rush just yet to tear that sucker apart. You need to find out if spark is getting to the plugs and if fuel is getting to the cylinders. When they do at the right time it should fire up. I wouldn't pay much attention to the compression just yet. If you can get it running you may find that the compression will come up after you have decarbed it. First get a manual for you motor and spend some time with it.

I would probably get a squeeze bottle of pre mix and squirt some in the carbs (bypasses the potential fuel pump problem). Hit the key and even if you do not get much more than a pop you will know that you should be able to get it running without dumping your wallet upside down.

I would get rid of the VRO if it were mine. Also think about impeller, plugs and lots of other stuff. Spend time also going over this board as there are hundreds of folks who were/are in the same boat you are.

And don't hesitate to come back with questions as there are some "heavy hitters" here who can help.
