Unidentified Antique(?) Outboard Motor. Please Help!

My girlfriend just brought two old motors home from a cabin her dad owned in northern Michigan. One is a 3.5 hp Sea King by Clinton, I think. Mod # is: bj9 1106d ; Serial # is: 263776 ; Type # is: 60 28923 r. This serial # doesn't seem to be matching up to anything I've found so far. The serial #s seem to end with the 250000 series in 1969. anybody got any ideas?
Now for the real JEWEL she brought home. The attached pics are of an unidentified outboard motor. The only # I;ve found on it is on the STBD side of the leg & doesn't match anything I've EVER seen. It is: E 463 58789. I do believe the gas tank was added on by her dad. Any knowledge of this motor would be GREATLY appreciated. THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Both of these motors are in great shape & spin ok, but I've not tried to run either of them yet. They have been stored for at least 25 years, because her dad has been dead for over 20 years.

hehe...that's a tough one because it looks like the cowling has been done away with.

The number 463 identifies a 1946 Scott Atwater 3.6 HP. And; the tiller handle sure looks like a SA.

The lower unit does too.

I'm far from being sure though...

Yep, 463 is a single-cyl Scottie. Is that an old sausage gas tank clamped to it? Sweet. It is missing its original tank...might find one on the free classifieds at www.aomci.org

Nah, that's an old lawn mower tank. Probably from a Sears with a Power Products engine. C.1955

Thanks yall! I really appreciate the drawing too! I'd love to hear it run as well, but I'll need the fuel mix. I'd guess 24:1, or maybe even 16:1? Is Modern oil ok, or should it use chain saw oil like my 1974 Ted Williams Eska? I'd also like to get it cleaned up & restored, so thanks for the link TM! When I get it all cleaned & runnin I'll post a link here to a utube video. I think I just found a new hobby. I like tinkerin' with these old motors! Hope it aint gonna cost me fishin time! Tough decision!


the SA website I just looked at says a 463 should be a 7.5 hp Twin. Obviously it's NOT! The thumbnail above says its a 461. Just wonderin' if the leg was swapped? Would there be an advantage to doing this? Faster gear ratio or something?

Nice motors!
The SA #463 doesn't make sense.
Numbers were exceptional in 1946 and were an odd #461 and #467 for singles.
Look again and see if it really says 463.

Pic comes out a bit fuzzy, but I think it is a part number.
1946 #461 is a single cyl. with rope start.
1946 #467 single cyl. is a deluxe with recoil start.
No #463 in any of my books.

PS: 1946 is an odd year, but most Scotts of this time period had an actual "tag" with model number and serial number affixed with button rivets.

Where should that tag be skippy? I originally thought this might be a part number also.

dont know what it is, but i do know that noah used it to take an ark to a mountain...lol. it is cool to see the old motors kinda like looking at old bikes and cars. the progression throughout the years. nice

Here is my 1947 Firestone, made by Scott-Atwater. You can clearly see the tag on the stern bracket.

Remember, 1946 was at the end of WWII and outboard demand was great. Scott and others dragged out the old pre-war stuff that was stashed during the war and built motors out of whatever they could. So anything is logical.

If I remember well the Scott Atwater OB's in the mid 50's were beautifully painted forest green with gold stripes ... sweet memories.

Sweet find with that Scottie!! I have a 1948 3.6 that my Dad bought at a yard sale probably 30 years ago. I started it a few weeks ago (first time in 12 or more years) and it ran very well. Have to check it out more thoroughly. It's coming to Virginia from New York State at the end of the month. Keep us updated on your progress!! Can't wait to hear it running!!

F R; Yours is nice! I wonder if I should restore ours? Think it's a worthwhile endeavor? It's an heirloom & probably not for sale, but I really would enjoy bringing it back to it's original form & seein' it run either way. Do you know what the pushbutton on the front of the carb does? Is it a primer or a choke? I also don't know the fuel/oil mix or oil type. My 1974 Ted williams Eska runs best on chain saw oil. Is this thing "air cooled" like that or should I use TCW-3? I'm pretty sure it has an impeller, but I'm kinda scared to take it apart 'till I can get the model number to match something. I hope this pic came out better than the last one. I seem to be havin' trouble gettin' full size ones to upload. You Should be able to see that the 463 is not only stamped in the leg, but also is in raised letters on the powerhead. The best link I can find is: http://www.scott-atwater.com/Model-ID.htm. Nothing sems to really fit. I think we're gonna drive 2 hours to Mastertech Marine this week to see if Mr. Kelly can help. We really like his website & he's not far away. I prefer to know correct procedures so that nothing gets destroyed! I'd probably lose my in-laws if i tear this thing up! That could be good, could be bad, LOL! Anyway, most of the parts I've seen available are for 1952 & up. Also, I was wondering if you know why the entire powerhead & leg slide up about 2"? Seems like it would be handy in these lakes down south where we are constantly "jumpin' stumps". Sorry for the Birage of questions, My 1974 Ted Williams kinda got me into this 'cause I had it runnin' 15 yrs. ago & now I'm really excited 'bout this motor & the Clinton too, even though the numbers on it dont seem to match either. Hey scanman - I'm going to run my Scottie on a 12' aluminum v-hull after I work on it a bit. I think it'll push the Sea King just fine..... I also have a Minn-Kota 65MX that will be used a lot on the lakes here that don't allow gas motors.
