Universal Voltage Regulator

My boat is powered by a 1965 V4AL Johnson outboard. It has the optional generator package on it instead of a DC generator. So it also has a junction box on it to rectify the AC and a voltage regulator on it to control the generator field. My regulator doesn't seem to be controlling the field. Perhaps the relay is stuck shut. Maybe the diodes in the regulator are shot.

I bought a universal regulator to somehow add into the system, but now that I have it I can see that I wll still need a way to regulate the generator output, so I can't really get rid of the existing regulator. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts about just putting it where the existing diodes are, to control the output of the bridge rectifier, and therefore the output of the generator. Let the field circuit do what it wants, but control the WOT voltage from the Rectifier.

When I am at WOT currently I get about 16VDC at my accessories, and my ammeter from the battery is pegged at 20. It does indicate from 0 to 10 amps at idle. It indicates below 0 when the outboard is off and the key is on.

Re: Universal Voltage Regulator

I'm a little confused, so bear with me. Does this motor have a stator charging system under the flywheel (standard) or a belt-driven DC Generator?

Re: Universal Voltage Regulator

This is an AC generator. The charging system controls dc current thru the generator field. the 'voltage regulator' has an F terminal and a B terminal. I suppose the diodes in the regulator could be bad, but I dont see how that causes overcharging. More likely the relay in it no longer operates and is stuck shut.

My question is really can I just replace the diodes in the junction box with this voltage regulator "01-090-1" from mfgsupply.com. It would keep voltage low, but the generator will be full on with it's voltage dependent on outboard RPM.

Re: Universal Voltage Regulator

What color are the wires from the new regulator rectifier? I have the same part and besides the two yellows it has a black and a black with white srtipe. Which one is the DC+?

Re: Universal Voltage Regulator

Did you ever take the cover off of the regulator and see if you can see anything wrong ?? Broken spring, bad contacts and ect .
