hello. I have a 2003 90 HP J90GLSTA Johnson motor. My motor seems to be experiencing high and low rpm when I have it at full throttle (rpm will rise and lower rise and lower). I opened it up and found this part to be tore up and the wire contacting the block. What is this part called and could it be the reason for this? It was between the two spark plugs on the right side of the block. Thanks.

Pretty sure it's your temp sensor. Maybe your alarm isn't working and you overheated your motor or ...... Not sure. Should be two of them on each side of your heads

Yes I believe that you are correct thank you. If the motor overheats, could it possibly result in that changing or rpms?

Maybe. My Etec goes into safe mode I believe but the rpms do not go up and down. Not sure on your year but that might possibly be it. Hopefully because it's not attached, it thinks it's overheating and is putting it in a safe mode. Do you think maybe you somehow tore it off putting the cowling on?

I just read some more blogs....safe mode 2500 rpm's and less. Looks like you have a ficht motor so unsure. Many problems with that series. After replacing the sensor, if it doesn't run right, you may need a mechanic to read the emm with a computer.

Racerone, you definitely know more than me so I relent. When I looked it up Ficht came about in 01 so wasn't sure. Do you know if his motor would go into a safe mode if the temp sensor came off?

??----FICHT came out in 1998 on the V--4 models.----It was not even marketed by Johnson in 2003

So they went back to carbs before they went bottoms up or sold both engines for awhile? Also, what is your opinion on this guy's issues?

The bad overheat sensor could be kicking the motor into SLOW mode, and then letting it out, or it could actually be detecting an overheat. Normally when an overheat is detected the motor goes into SLOW and stays there, even if the motor cools off, so the powerpack would be acting up as well, which is unlikely.
The only way is to disconnect the temp sensor for a test. If the RPMs still fluctuate, it is just as likely that you have a fuel delivery problem.

Try pumping the fuel primer bulb and see if it clears up. If so, the issue is clogged filters, clogged antisiphon valve, air leaks, bad primer bulb, or something else.
