Unsolicited advice

Here is a SHTWB/F - expecting that some anonymous dude at the boat ramp will react positively to a friendly request to turn their lights off.

I mean really, it's dark and he's standing there with the truck running waiting for his friend to drive the boat on the trailer. I walk by and say "how ya doing?" and he says fine and I ask, "hey man, I'm about to back down the ramp, can you kill the headlights so I can see?"

So why on earth would anyone stare off into space and ignore such a simple request?

I considered turning the headlights off myself using a tire iron, but that probably would have hurt their feelings.

Yeah. Bright lights can make stuff invisible. . .stuff you need to see.

Try driving in traffic on a rainy night when you have cataracts.

That's why I don't drive at night any more. :(

He may not have heard you if he was close to the water and the back of his (running) truck.
Interestingly you guys have a choice south of the border in turning off the lights. Up here on the Canadian side we have the 'daytime running lights' module required in all vehicles. This means as soon as you start your ignition your headlights will be on...the only way to turn them off is to shut the vehicle down.

There's a sequence to turn off the day time lights, some thing with on -off a few times with the h/l switch or dimmer. My buddy found this out on his Ford truck,I'd imagine all brands have similar capability.

He definitely heard me. He heard my greeting and smiled, but as soon as I mentioned he turn his lights off he shifted his feet and stared off in the distance.

I know that on cars you can lift the emergency brake handle up one click and it turns the DRL off, but I'm not sure about trucks.

to kill the lights on newer model chevy trucks you can push the interior light button off and on and they will go off

I would have broken out the million cp soptlight and kept it on him until he got a tan. If that wasn't enough, I'm sure I could find a few more ;). Short of that, a pebble in a valve stem cap always does the treick. Usually takes a few days and tries to figure it out :)

Out of courtesy, I always turn off my headlamps when at the launch. We frequent quite a few places that have homes across the road and I'm sure they don't appreciate headlights blazing into their windows. It's very easy to do on my Trailblazer. Simply rotate the headlamp switch to the parking lamps only mode.

I also avoid door slamming too. Nothing worse than repeated door slamming on an otherwise quiet spot. I like to be a good neighbor so they're less inclined to fight against having the launch there and I just envision if I lived there, how would I like that?

You are a rare breed-today. As a fellow boater, I appreciate your thoughtfulness.

a little pull, usually one click on the handbrake will 'kill' the driving lights for you...should probably have it engaged whilst stopped at bottom of ramp anyway, but what do i know ;)
