Unsure of year of engine?

There is a metal serial # tag on transom for the Mercruiser stern drive..# is 2072096

The side of the valve cover says 120 hp in faded letters


There is a metal tag near the bell housing area with a serial # of2059170

And cast into the side of the block just above the starter is the number 3849449 K165
and just under the k165 it says what appears to be CON 2..

Do these mean anything?

Im guessing if its the original motor to the boat,its in a early 70,s aluminum Starcraft.

This boat is a buddy of mine, It was his dads and his dad passed in 96 or 97 and the boat has sat, well for sentimental reason my buddy wants to bring this boat back to life.

Just looking for info on the motor and outdrive and what kind of undertaking am i getting myself into helping?

Are you sure about the year of the boat? By the SN's, the drive is in the 67-69 range, the engine is basically the same, but no way to track it closer.

Not sure at all, that was just a guess by the appearance and looks of the boat...Its in decent shape for the age.

Is this motor similar to the mid 90s carbed 3.0 merc?

Your of2059170 number is to long by one number, If I take the "0" away at the end of the numbers, That serial number comes up as, Transom serial number: 0F205917 Model number 6010005GS, And it belongs to a MERCRUISER ALPHA TRANSOM assembly that was Manufactured on 09/17/1993.

Maybe photos will help out better with this one.

Sorry that was a typo with my fat fingers on the keyboard and lack of hitting the space bar, that should read
serial # of 2059170 the of is not part of the serial #

Yeah, that got me at first. Then realized the number of numbers was also for approximately the same year engine as drive.

The engine is similar to the 120's from the 60 & 70's era.
Here is a link to my OEM service manual that covers both the engine and the drive for that engine. Download it and use it as needed, just put it back when you're done. Someone else may want to borrow it .
