My son has been looking for mid-size SUV, 4 wheel drive for over year. Yesterday I located a 2000 Druango, with 43,000 original miles. It is a private sale, (consignment), by a wealthy divorced lady, who need's to get rid of it.

The lady has had all of it's servicing by the dealer and has all the recall's preformed. (The complete service record go's with the vehicle.) The servicing is up to date, which included all new brakes, 6000 miles ago. It does need tires, as it has the originals on it.

It has many options, which makes this a sweet deal for $11,000.

Does anybody have any positions pro or con on these Durango SUV's?

...Bob in Calif...

Re: UPDATE>>>Does anybody drive A Dodge Durango Suv with the 4.7 V-8?

I have a 99 Dakota (5.2L not 4.7) and I love it.

2000 is the first year for the 4.7 (replaced the 5.2), and it debuted with a foaming problem in the oil filler neck which turned out to cause no problems. They stuck a baffle in there to hide it I guess, you can probably open the oil fill cap, pull out the baffle, and see. I guess I'd describe the 4.7 as a horsepower motor compared to the 5.2, it's a bit peppeir but tows well too. It also gets somewhat better mileage. Spark plug changes are a bit more challenging with 8 individual coils(installed on top of the spark plug). The 4.7 has turned out to be a pretty good engine..it spawned the 3.7 V6 which just came out in the last couple years.
2000 was also the first year with a computer controlled automatic transmission, if that matters to you.

Some things to look out for: First and foremost is the balljoints. I dont remember if 2000 model year was covered under the recent recall, but I know my 99 wasnt and the problem exists in all Dakotas and Durangoes from 1997 (98 for the 'rango) to 04 for the durango and 05 for the Dakota. If the balljoints have not been replaced, expect to be replacing them at some point. Before the recall, dodge would just replace the entire control arm assy. which would come with new balljoints, but they're the same old crap. I dont know if thats how they do it under the recall, but I doubt it. I replaced mine with aftermarket joints so I never have to worry about it again.

These things also have rear wheel speed sensors that tend to fail. It's located in the top of the rear diff, no big deal to fix, but it's a problem nonetheless. Mine has yet to fail.

The 2000 should have front discs and rear drums for brakes. The stock dodge rotors have a tendency to warp if the wheel isnt torqued down properly, as the rotor is simply sandwiched between the wheel and the hub. This is another one of those "common problems" that may have been resolved during the last brake job, might want to ask if the rotors were replaced or turned. I am still running one original rotor with no problems (I know I know, replace one replace both, but I didnt).

Thats all I can think of for now. It sounds like you are getting a great deal on a great SUV. I tow many different types of boats with my dakota and it does great, and after 115,000 miles it has yet to let me down. The auto trans lasted me 100,000 miles and thats with towing and only one fluid change while I owned it (since about 47K miles). I swapped the auto for a manual 5 speed because I wanted to.

Good luck, hope it works out for you.

P.S., Noticed you're on the peninsula, whereabouts? I'm in South San Jose.

Dan

Warden J..........

Thanks for the input regarding the Durango, I really appreciate it. I have a fishing buddy who bought a new 2000 for his wife. He mentioned the recall on the ball joints. Today I asked the fellow who is selling it for the lady if it was up to date on the the re-call corrections. He looked in the file she gave him for the vehicle and bingo, the ball joints had been replaced in 2004, as well as some lesser recalled items.

I'm familar with the computer controled trans and the brake sensors, as I have a 2001, 2500 van conversion.

This thing is really loaded. It has one of those Blaupunkt navagation systems, a pull down tv screen, with a vcr, multi-disc cd player, rear a/c, inside/outside thermometer, Tow package, etc, all in great shape. The body is in excellent condition and not a sign of shopping cart "rash." We'll make the deal on it Thursday and pick it up on Friday.

I'm in Woodside, just north of you, off of 280.

Thanks again... ...Bob in Calif...

I have a 03 with the 4.7 and haven't had a lick of trouble since new. The gas mileage is nothing to rave about but it does tow well.
BTW what's an original mile? Or a non-original mile for that matter ;) :p

Original miles are those driven on "the road less travelled"....blazing new trails, so to speak. Unorginial miles are the usual freeway, city street stuff we all do.... :p :D

WardenJ...........

Are you aware that there is a boat named "Warden Johnson, and called the "Warden J", that was built for and used for the transportion of prisoners to and from Alcatraz Island and San Francisco.

It is a "fantail" and I think is still afloat, in very poor condition, as it was the last time I saw it, several years ago.

...Bob in Calif...

Hey Bob, my SN is WardenJ because of the Warden Johnston. She served Alcatraz as a schoolbus, grocery getter, and general ride to SF for the families and employees of the prison, occasionally carrying a high profile prisoner. If I remember correctly, her primary purpose was not to transport prisoners. My Sea Scout unit, the Challenger, ran the Warden as our training vessel from the 1960s until 1998. I joined in 1996 and spent my first two years in the program on the Warden Johnston. Every August we'd cruise her to Alcatraz and tie up in her old dock (scary with a single screw, very little power, and the currents in that area) for the anniversary of the closing of the prison. They would let us run free on the island and even sleep in the cells. We heard that only the Warden and the ferries were/are allowed to tie up at Alcatraz.

We got an 82 foot former Coast Guard Cutter to replace the Warden in '98 and we sold her to a guy up in San Rafael who restores wood boats for a living/hobby. He did a magnificent job with the exterior and cleaning it up inside, with the goal of returning it to its original route to and from Alcatraz as a historical ferry. The City wasn't interested, and I think he ran out of money or something because she's for sale currently. The Sea Scouts completely re-did the interior of the boat to make it livable, because when Alcatraz had it, it was just a row of benches. The current owner never got to restoring the inside, just cleaned it up.

The Warden was a great boat. She couldnt get out of her own way with a tailwind and a following sea, but it was fun to cruise and train on a piece of history such as that.

When did you see her last? The Challenger sort of went defunct in about 1989, and the Warden sat for about 5 years until my generation revived the unit and the boat. But since it sat so long before we got a hold of her, it was all we could do to keep up with her deterioration.

Last year we replaced the 82 footer with the 95 footer in my avatar, so the Warden is now two boats ago for us, but we had a lot of good times with her and we won't be forgetting her.

Theres some current pictures of her at www.wardenjohnston.com. It's the website that the current owner had made up.
This photo is from 1996, right after a haul-out.

Dan

WardenJ..........

You must have been involved with the "WJ", when it was in docked in Redwood City. That's the last place I saw it, when it was in it's state of decay. I'm glad it has been brought back to life. I have been on it several times and really enjoyed it.

...Bob in Calif...

Ok, it's too late for any negitive opinion's. My son bought the Durango about an hour ago and he got it for his offer of $11,000, plus tax naturally. The original factory window sticker was in the file and showed the original price was $34,954...43,ooo miles ago... I think he did quite well, especially since dear old dad (me) didn't have to lay out a dime!!! :D

Now he can quit sending me 30 or 40 e-mails a week , showing suv's and pickup's that are for sale.

...Bob in Calif...

Bob:

Nice job on the Durango, i'm sure he'll love it.

As for the Warden, we had her at the Port of Redwood City until she was sold. Our 95 is kept there now, but at a different dock. The 82 currently occupies the Warden's old dock. Too many boats!

Do you have any involvement with the Sea Scouts that got you on her? Or when did you get a chance to see her?

Dan
