Re: Hit a sand bar.... skeg is toast

well, here is an update... I got the quote back from the dealer.... the upper and lower gears are OK, the prop shaft is bent 5/1000 inch... and they want to replace the bearings in the drive... and repair the skeg.

Total price is $1031 for parts and $1500 for labor and services
Grand total $2747

The prop shaft is $450 and the bearing total cost $370...

so i was kinda shocked.

According to Mercury you can have up to .008" run out on the prop shaft.Your still within spec.Personally what I would do is put on the skeg gaurd myself, buy a new aluminum prop and run it.The prop you have isn't worth trying to fix.If it seems to have an noises then take it in.I think it will be fine.

Just my 2 cents.

they measured the .005" at the base of the shaft, which means at the end, where the prop is, is a little more.

Also, there was "some" vibration/wierd noises when i went back to the launch at a slow speed, definatley something that wasnt there before....
The also, said the bearings something take a beating when a impact happens, and they found some to be worn.

The thing is, I have insurance, so if i was to run it the way it is, and then have something break, the insurance company may find out that it was not repaired correctly at first, and may deny a claim in the future.

I will probably file a claim

Having that skeg repaired should cost less then most skeg guards. The thing I personally don't like about the guards is that they are usually made of a harder metal then the aluminium that the drive is made of so if you hit something again the drive and not just the skeg will take the brunt of it. call your local prop shop and they should be able to repair both the skeg and prop to like new condition in short order.

The shop said that the skeg would be $150 to repair/paint... and the prop about $80.... I paid $110 for it shipped.
