UPDATE- I have found a mid 80's Onan MCCK 6.5 KW gen set, have not bought it yet, does anyone have hands on experience with one of these units, as well the factory genset was a onan 4KW MCCK, so this one will be a bit bigger physicaly.

I am in the midst of tracking down at least a 4KW genny for our 1985, sundancer. I have an air cooled onan cck 4.0 that "I believe" could be marinized with the exaust manifold/starter/etc changed out, but not to happy about the air cooled thing below deck.
I would rather go with a smaller water cooled westerbeke, etc.
Whats in your boat and if you have a sundancer of that vintage, were is yours mounted????
thanks
rob

I would give no thought to trying to use the one you have now.
I would think a lot about a smaller one. 3k for sure and maybe a 2 if they make them. This lets you look at more places to put it. many articles are on the web about a safe instillation. have your project looked at by a pro before you buy or install.

Thanks for the input Lyle, still looking for pictures of the factory installation point. As well as size KW?

RBH,

Do you have AC?If not you could possibly get by with a 2-3 KW. Assuming the AC on your 270 is similar to our 280, you should be looking at 3.5 to 4 KW. Have you tried downloading the owner's manual from Sea Ray? You may not be able to get a 1985 version, but the 270 hull has been produced for many years.

An air cooled Gen that is not ignition protected would be a serious safety concern, and in the US would definitely get you in trouble with the CG during a safety inspection. Even if you could convert it, you might still have problems with insurance coverage.

I'm on the same quest myself. I just looked at a couple diesel units at the local boat show. These tend to be smaller than the gas versions, and the fuel consumption level is low enough that a 5 gallon jug would last a couple weekends. I have also seen a YouTube video of a Westerbeke installation on a 280 that was posted on a Sea Ray owners site.

HI-
as I noted we have an air cooled cck, I was thinking of converting over to an MCCK, which is the marine equivelent I think.
But not to happy with the air cooled thing.
so I am shopping for a straight marine genny,
I have figured out my max watt usage at one time and I can get away with a 4-5kw genny.
What I could really use is pictures of were they mounted a genset in a 1985 270 da (or any mid 80`s sundancer)
thanks
