(Update) Just had to bragg about my purchase I just made

Don't know if it is much to bragg about but I just bought these 2 old Evinrude 35hp motors from my uncle earlier today for $50. I am in for alot of work I know. These old motors were sitting in his shed for years until recently (a couple of days ago) he scrapped the shed and the motors were sitting outside, but we haven't had any rain sense. The black motor was a running motor before put in storage.

Unfortunatly both motors were missing the spark plugs out of them, one motor only had 1 spark plug in it, but both motors are free (not locked up). I just can't make out the serial number or model number on these motors, and I'm not even sure of the years. They put these plates in the hardest spot to read them.

I really kicked myself for selling the 1957 35hp Johnson Sea horse that I had, I sold it for $200 (never touched it) and I recently found out that my other uncle had that motor running a while back.

Anyhow I look forward to the day I can tackle these projects and can't wait to hear them run.

I just hate people who brag about their good deals and constantly post pics of their old motors like someone actually wants to see them! It's very bad manners....Especially since the pics aren't up close where I can see them better. Thank goodness I never do such things!
You need to get to work on 'em. I like to see the before and after pics.

Alright Jbjennings and TD . TD you mean demolition/restoration lol. I figure at worst I might half to part them out, but I am going to give them a chance. Just thought of it, one has to be a Johnson and the other an Evinrude. I didn't catch what you said TD until just now lol, I read your post again and noticed that you said Johnson and E'rude. What my uncle had planned was to take the electric start off of the Johnson and put it on the Evinrude, I could just picture pull starting that bad boy.

LOL, buyer's responibility not the seller's. Seriously I have plans for at least one of the motors, I would like to put it on the 57 Whitehouse runabout (that is what the 57' 35hp Johnson I sold like a DUM**** came off of). I would like to get both motors running but I might end up robbing parts off of one motor just to get the best out of the two running. I'm going to try not to do that if both motors have good compression, I would like to get both running. Even if one has bad compression I would consider a rebuild on it. I don't expect the recoil ropes to last past 6 pulls at the most lol, so that might one of the first obstacles.

If nothing else I might end up with a back up motor, to early to tell. I also need to see if I can find the air box for the one motor laying around where these motors were at.

I just built a stand for them today, unfortanately I will half to add more support where the stand will hold both motors. I have not attempted to hang both motors on this stand, I new from when I hung the one motor on that I would be pushing it over the limit with 2 on there. I about had a major malfunction while lifting the Johnson up and hanging it on the stand, luckily I was able to work it out without dropping the motor and without hollering for for help. I wished I had enough 2x3 in tubing I would build a stand out of that.

I still haven't got these serial numbers off of the motors, I would love to find out that one of them is a 25hp and not a 35hp that way I would have a motor for my 13ft boat and a motor for my runabout.

BB1 I might be coming out your way (well actually north of you) if my cousin decides to get this other boat motor that he is interested in.

Here is some pics on the stand I built. I'm missing the airbox off of the Evinrude. I have the prop for the Johnson, it's just not installed on the motor.

I reinforced my stand and got both motors on it now. Just done a compression test on these motors, exept for the top cylinder on the E'rude. Neither motor has fire after doing a spark check. They must of stripped the plug hole out and drilled it out bigger , when I get an extra set of hands around to help I will use the push on compression gauge and take it from there.

So far the Johnson has 100 on the bottom and 110 on the top, the E'rude has 110 on the bottom.

I couldn't get the flywheel off of the Johnson, I sprayed it down with liquid wrench hopefully that will help it. I broke a 2 bolts off in the flywheel when using the puller , I got one out but I will half to drill the other.

I got the flywheel off of the E'rude and it does have a busted coil and doesn't show any spark at the points, the other coil looks great (which that doesn't mean anything).

this is how you build a stand for 2. all straight pieces and 32 inches. 3 8ft 2x4's. that's a 50hp merc and 18 rude

You are SOL. Looks like a 1957 Evinrude Big Twin 35 hp and a 1956-58 Johnson. If its a 1956 its a 30 hp otherwise its a 35 hp. I doubt its a 1956. Hope that its a 35 hp so you have a parts motor with 12V electronics.

What do you mean that the coil is broken? Do you mean its cracked? They are probably original and have to be replaced. Replace the entire ignition including points, condensors, plug wires and boots. I've attached a photo of some bad coils.

110 psi is good.

Hey TD, yep I built mine out of 2x8, I replaced the 2x4 which was holding the one motor in the pic below with a 2x8. I used 2x4s for the supports. So far it is pretty sturdy after turning the motors over to do a compression check and a little tapping with a hammer that stand isn't going anywhere.

Wbeaton that E'rude is definitly a 57 by the numbers I got off of the freeze plug. On the Johnson on the other hand I can't make out one number on the freeze plug, from what I see it is 1571737. Yep my coil on the E'rude is worse then the one in your pic, it is cracked I just said it was busted but basically it is busted.

I did a compression check on that top cylinder on the E'rude and got a 100lbs on the gauge. I know the coils are only around $22.95 a piece, the points and condensor kits, is 21.55 a piece, the plug wires are $3.80 a piece. I was looking on vintageoutboards.com for the parts I found all the above prices on that website.

If 1571737 is the serial number, which I suspect it is then you have a 1957 35 hp.

The compression is fine. I'd prefer they were slightly closer, but they are ok. You can get all the tune up parts anywhere that sells JohnnyRude parts. You can even get them here at iboats.

I couldn't find that airbox for the E'rude at my uncle's place, so now I'll half to search for that sometime down the road maybe on Ebay or another website I'm in no big rush.

Still can't get that flippin flywheel off of that Johnson.

You might want to use a little heat on the flywheel to get it to expand a little. Not too much or you will ruin the magnet or warp the flywheel. Just enough. I'd heat it a little (warm to the touch, not hot, around the center bolt and not near the edge where the magnet is. Then a couple of gentle raps with a rubber hammer. I'll probably get scolded for saying use heat but just looking at your motors, they're going to need a lot of heat in various places to get a lot of your bolts out. That's from experience, as I live down south like you and the heat and humidity over the years will sure seize up some bolts. Never use too much torque on 'em because they're sure to break in the most difficult spot possible to drill them out and fix 'em. And don't even CONSIDER using an easy-out. Trust me, you don't want to know! They just had a discussion about those things on another site and I'm with one of the members here----they are an accident waiting to happen. If you break off an easy-out in a screw, you are "screwed" sure enough. THey're too hard to drill out with anything I've found.

I might try that heating method. As for using an easy out, that wasn't even in the works, I don't have any luck with those darn things plus I too have witnessed others breaking them off in the hole. It would be nice if this liquid wrench would help me get this flywheel off. I know that the bolt that is broke off in the flywheel wasn't real tight. I might also be able to use a small punch and tap it around until I can get a set of vice grips on it to turn it the wrest of the way out.

Once I get this flywheel off it will be going straight to the drill press to drill the broken bolt out if my other method doesn't work out. I seem to have pretty good luck lately with drilling and tapping the holes out.

That may be true, but there is nothing to these motors, should be a simple fix with a little bit a money and time. With the compression readings as good as they are I don't think I went wrong on buying these motors.

I was wondering at one point if the Evinrude was a lark model, but I believe it is a standard big twin model. If I can adapt a starter to that Evinrude I will be putting the electric start decals on it if I get this motor running.

I got the paint codes for both motors, I haven't found the paint yet can't afford it at the moment anyway. I would like to get them running first of coarse before I decide to paint them. I finally got the flywheel off of the Johnson, I won't give my little secret away because you all might bash me for it but it did involve using wedges. I drilled and tapped the hole on the flywheel where I broke the bolt off in it.

I got the foot off of the Johonson after having to grind the head off of one bolt (because there was hardly anything left) and breaking another bolt off in the LU. I took a set of vice grips and got one bolt out, but I broke the other flush with the bolt hole .

There was nothing left of the impeller on the Johnson motor, the E'rude impeller is still flexible and in one piece, but I need to get a kit anyway because I need another impeller housing and seals. The Johnson foot and LU is nasty and gunked up with any and everything, the E'rude was clean as can be.

What I can't figure out is why I can pull the drive shaft up on the Johnson foot, I don't know what is wrong with it but it will turn the prop when put in gear. The drive shaft Evinrude foot doesn't move when pulling up on it.

I've got to make arangements to pickup a 59' 5.5hp Johnson that I just bought for $43 .
