Re: update...not good

Because no matter how careful you are, you're going to get some grit in the engine and that is not good for longevity. Just my opinion though, and that is the only reason, otherwise I would definitely hone the cylinder just enough to break the glaze.

After you hone the cylinder you would need to wash the cylinder with soap and hot water to get the minute paticles out. These particles will get sucked up in the oil pump and pass through the oil passages. Eventualy they will scar the bearings and eat the motor.

Your call.

I just don't understand why you are thinking that it's that much more effort to pull the engine. It's just the 6 bolts on the outdrive, motor mounts (2 bolts on the rear housing & 3 bolts on each side into the stringer), wire harness, water intake hose, risers, maybe a couple of other things here and there.. but, it's not that big of a feat... and you'll probably spend more time circumventing the need to pull the motor than you will actually pulling it. You can use a cable puller and a big tree.

Out of curiousity, what/how would you anchor that to the engine? I assume cables around the engine in some form and then hook to the cables?

Use the lifting eye on top of the engine. That's why they put it there.

On my 5.7, there is an eye on the front port side of the engine and one the rear starbord side of it.. I ran a chain from one eye to the other and then hooked the come-along (wench/puller) to the chain.

If by chance there was no lifting eye you could bolt a chain to the heads at oposite ends and lift that.

Why dont you measure the clearance between the oil pan and the inner hull and let us know. This way we can tellyou weather or not you will have to pull the motor.

If you can get the pan off, you have a shot. But protect the rest of the motor or it will not last long. Once you hone and clean, CLEAN again and again. Oil the cylinder before reinstall and dunk the piston in a bucket of oil befor putting it in. If you change the rod bearing, get some plastic gage from the auto store and check the manual for specks.

To me that looks like the spark plug overheated and initiated that failure. That's probably when your boom ocurred. That doesn't look like a detonation failure to me. Were any of the rings broken?

Also there is a little carbon build up on the top of the cylinder...whats the best way to clean this off?

Scraper or wire brush. It doesn't have to be perfect. Any chemicals will just make a mess of everything. Shop Vac it when you're done to clean up debris.

Wait till it is running and use Seafoam. Soand like that engine has seen better days.

Those pistons look like they suffered from preignition problems which is usually preceded by detonation. Be sure your running the correct spark plugs and the distributer is working correctly. Be sure to check total timming advance when you get the engine back together.
