Well Shawn ole buddy, you'll have to remedy that compression problem first. Or all the coils in the world won't help. This is interesting because you note the new gaskets. Although you didn't say which ones. You say the motor may have been gone thru. You didn't say it was repaired. You can try soaking that bad hole with an engine cleaner,and see what you come up with. If it were me I think I'd pull the head of this puppy and see if I had a dog.

Forgot...there are two plates on the exhaust side. An inside plate and the outside plate. Bolts hold it all together.<br /><br />OBJim

Alcan...can he get the lower head bolts out. I was thinking this to but couldn't remember if the lower head bolts were easily accessable.<br /><br />OBJim<br /><br />By the By alcan..did ya get that crazy movie I sent ya? The one with the tow getting "anchored".

Shawn Go ahead and try the engine cleaner first. Sea foam, ring free are some brand names. This dosn't cost much. If you don't have a manual, get one. A lot of time you can get them at the library (dosn't cost anything) if not they are only about $35. If the soaking thing dosn't work, some disassembly will be required. <br /> Jim, I don't type so I'm a slow poster.I'm not sure which would be easier to remove (exhaust cove or head) on this model. I was tring to get Shawn to tell us where these new gaskets were located. If they are new on the exhaust cover, then look there first. Since Shawn has described this unit as having been somewhat patched together, I figured why mess around, go for the head and get a good look. No I didn't see the movie. I had some problems with this darn thing (Computer) a while back and my guru had to straighten the mess.

alcan,<br /><br />two guys I know have both told me that the cylinder looks very gummed up. The coil that is on this particular cylinder is messed up, which would cause a lot of unburned fuel...meaning it is being deposited on the piston/ring...thus causing the ring to stick.<br /><br />I will try to de-gum it before I tear it apart. well boys..<br /><br />Today I went with the advice of a few of you, and used a de-carbon solvent/spray. I used SeaFoam's Deep Creep.<br /><br />The compression ratio, unfortunately, did not change on the lower cylinder. So, I guess I need to go ahead and pull the head off of it, and see what the cylinder looks like...and hope for the best.<br /><br />As for the rest of the engine...it sure seems to idle a lot better/smoother now that I sprayed the de-carb into the carbs...smoked a lot, but I think it helped!<br /><br />Thanks<br />Shawn

Hi Shawn....<br /><br />Hopefully it will be just stuck rings. Pull the head as alcan suggested. I checked an engine similar to yours and the head is the easiest. Hope it's not to bad.<br /><br />OBJim

I plan to pull the head tomorrow, or at least begin.<br /><br />Where will be a good place to order a new headgasket and new coils?<br /><br />BTW, the headgasket AND the head cover gasket, as well as the exhaust manifold cover gasket...they are all new.<br /><br />I talked to the previous owner, and someone told him that he may have water leaking through the exhaust into the cylinder, or something alond those lines...ever heard anything like that?<br /><br />Thanks for the help!<br />Shawn

I've been told they are about $30 for this engine.<br /><br />Any advice?<br /><br />BTW, I think I just found a newer johnson motor for next to nothing...The guy said it was a 60(didn't know johnson made a 60), and he thought it was an early 90's model. Shawn....<br /><br />Just pull the head and that should tell you the story. Head gaskets can be had from iboats or NAPA which ever is handier. Get a year for the next to nothing 60hp and let us know. Usually, when it's next to nothing, it cost a bundle in the end. BUT, always the exception.<br /><br />OBJim

OBjim,<br /><br />I checked prices on the headgasket, it's $17.65 at napa, not too bad!<br /><br />As for the head, I'll be taking it off today and checking it out.<br /><br />I do know that the guy I bought it from gave me a spare 'power head', the block. I think it was a 70hp, but it should be the same from what I can tell. If the cylinder is scarred in this block, I can always swap everything to that one...<br /><br />I'll post pics/results of the head removal later on.<br /><br />Thanks!<br />Shawn

What year is the motor that you are working on vs the on that you said that early 90's you said that you could get? If that motor is very old it will not be worth as much as the one you said that you could get. If you have to overhaul the engine, I say buy the Johnson and put this one on eBay for a parts motor. Coils and pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets are very expensive.

It turns out that the engine he was going to give/sell me really cheap is a 135 Johnson, late 80's model. That is 45hp over what the boat I have is rated for, so I wont be able to use it. However, I AM going to get it..because I plan on building a boat from www.bateau.com eventually...and it will work perfect for that boat.I didn't get a number off of it, but I can pretty much tell by the cowling on it that it's a late 80's.<br /><br />As for the current engine I have, I priced some parts last night.<br />Coils are 24.95, head gasket is 17.65, a piston is ~100.00, rings are 19.95, etc..<br />Not too bad in my opinion.<br /><br />Thanks, I'll let you know how the head removal goes and what it uncovers<br /><br />Shawn

If you truly want the motor to last then you need to replace all the pistons and bearing and rings. Replacing just one piston will work, but it is just a patch. Why not replace them all and have basically a new motor?

nathan,<br /><br />If the block is salvageable, I intend to replace all 3 ring sets at least, possibly the pistons. Maybe not pistons, but at least re-ring the current ones. I'll be sure to inspect them though before I make any choices.<br /><br />As for 'patching' it...I dont intend to keep the boat more than a year. I just ordered plans to build a boat better suited to my fishing needs, and this one is basically just to hold me over until then. <br />I couldn't pass the price up, and I can sell it for what I paid for it (or what I've got into it), and someone else will still be getting a good deal.<br /><br />I'll be sure to let you all know how the cylinder looks after I've removed the head.<br /><br />Shawn

well boys...bad news (or good news, if you consider a rebuild a 'GOOD' thing..)<br /><br />Here's a picture of the bottom cylinder on my 65hp johnson. It sure makes it pretty obvious as to why I only had 28psi of compression!<br /><br />

<br /><br />So, I'm assuming the head is not salvageable...am I right?<br /><br />What causes this type of thing? <br />I'd sure hate to put it all back together after freshening it up..and have the same thing happen again.<br /><br />I will have pictures of the piston/cylinder within an hour...<br /><br />Thanks!<br />Shawn
