OK i turned the engine over to see if drive was turnind and it is. I took the cap off of the top of the outdrive, The gears and lube look good. Then i put the drive in forward gear the prop turned normal clockwize. turned counter and it would not turn so i turned it real hard and it did turn. The prop shaft turned also. But the shaft and gear at the upper gears did not. I could feel when i turn the prop the it is catching some gears but then slips.
I cant remeber is the shaft the goes thru the outdrive come in peices? If i rem correctly i think it is a 3 pc shaft. Its a Alpha 1
Could it be the shaft thet has spun?

Re: (Update) on Lost Propusion

Well the problem was i thore out the lower gears. Now the Question i have is could the wrong type of prop do this? reason, I needed a new prop went to the dealer near hear he said he had a better prop for my boat. I purchased it, then thore out the upper gears of the outdrive.(After about 40 hrs of use) Then i purchased a new outdrive instead of replacing the gears. Ran the new out drive for about 12-14 hours total. now have thorn the lower gears out of this one. I have a 1988 268 SeaRay Sundancer, 5.7 with Alpha 1 outdrive.
Could use all the help i can get !!!!

Re: (Update) on Lost Propusion

what can i do to help?

You know..That is a great answer to my smart arse comment.
I do apologize for being an a**....

Since you asked. It really helps if you use punctuation where needed.
It is very difficult (at least for me) to read a post when all the sentences slam into each other.

Also, I do not know what you are meaning by "thore out", do you mean "tore out"??

I know it is easy to type as if you are speaking in your mind, however it does not read the same in other people's minds...

I am very sorry for the way my post appear today. I spent about 8 hours stranded on the lake yesterday and I am very tired today.

Had to call a friend who lives 60 miles away to come tow me in because no one would so much as stop and ask if i needed help. They acted like i was waving at them.

I've spent the whole day diagnosing and reparing the stripped lower gears.

After looking at the whole picture and tearing out the upper and lower gears.

The question is could the wrong prop cause the gears to strip?

Oh wow..
I am very sorry to hear that. What's with other boaters that don't offer help?????

In my opinion, your gears werent damaged by the prop.
They wrong prop will cause fautige and cause internal engine failure over the long term..I don't see this happening within your short time frame though..

I hope that others smarter than I come by and helps you more than I can

Re: (Update) on Lost Propusion

Thank you for your imput. It seems strange to spin the gears on a new outdrive so quickly.
As for the other boaters , I have no idea what they are thinking. I personly have spent a few half days on the water helping or towing someone back to the dock.
