Hi guys, as you can see, compared to my last post i have done some work. i got the deck cut out and stringers pulled out, and everything somewhat clean.

now, my next problem is the transom. seem like i have 3 choices:

1. pull the back end of the cap, cut the inner skin off, pull out old wood and replace and reglass

2. leave the cap on, cut the outside of the transom off, replace pull out old wood, replace and reglass and try to refinish so it matches the rest of the hull (does not sound like i want to do that)

3. use chain saw to eat up old wood, and pour sea cast (do not have to pull cap). but im not really wanting to pay that much for seacast.

it seems the traditional way of doing it is option number one. that is what i think i want to do. But my problem:

I do not see how to pull the cap up to get full access to the transom????

i have peeled that rubber and metal rub rail off the side of the hull, but i do not find that is holding the cap on? i have looked up under it, but do not see any screws or bolts holding it on? not sure what to do or how to proceed?

Please help me, is there any easier way of doing this?

forgot to mention, down the entire center between the two stringers, was rotton waterlogged foam. i do not think i am going to put it back in

do it like i did. Cut the cap about 3 feet back from the transom and take the back part of the cap off. Look at my photobucket pics. I got full access to the transom that way and i can still do stringers without pulling the whole cap off. Good luck and keep the pics coming as i try to do.

thanks drew, i see where you cut the cap. what did you cut the cap with? once i cut the cap, how do i pull it off, is it just glued?

also, in my 4th pic above, you can see the inside of the transom. do i just cut the fiberglass and pull it off exposing the wood?

thanks

another way to do it is to take the whole cap off....not that much work....

#1. remove rub rail
#2. drill out all rivets
#3. remove cap

if you cut the cap you still have to remove the rivets to take the back section off

forget about cutting the transom out from the outside......unless you take very careful mesurements, the room for error is huge.

hope that helps

On mine there was screws there under the rubber and im going to glass it back on and re-finish the top sides of the cap. Good luck. I didnt want to take my whole cap off. Thats just a matter of how you want to do things.

Look closely, if you don't see any rivets there might be screws. Once all those are out there is a bead of caulk between the cap and hull that needs to come apart. The two parts will almost jump apart. If you have rivets, just replace with pop-rivets. Mine had a couple of hundred so I spent the $20 at harbor freight for the air powered riveter.

yup.....take the grinder to the glass lining....

i cut at the joint line.......then was able to pull the transom in one peice.....

obviously dont be afraid of cutting into the wood of the transom....but do be afarid of cutting into the hull......(but even that can be fixed).....
