Great looking boat! Congrats on the purchase and if you're on the Chesapeake bay this summer I hope to see it roaring by.

Yep -- every color and detail is custom: Top deck, stripes, hull, interior liner, bezels, keel, etc. Every interior color detail is custom ordered, too. Seats have like 4-5 colors in one seat detail and you pick every single one which then turns into accent colors along other cushions, coaming pads, etc.

I was dragging my feet and the next thing I knew I had to get the darn jackplate off to them for rigging on Monday morning!

Thanks, guys. I am posting pics because I learned that boat peeps (esp iboaters) love to see boats being built/restored, and this is a nice glimpse into an actual shop as a boat is being built day by day.

Next week should reveal some interesting photos as rigging takes place.

It pretty awesome that they realize you have choices with that suitcase of cash and appreciate your business enough to do this.
This is the "relationship for life" aspect that many companies have forgotten.

Re: (Updated 1/6/2012) Checkmate factory pics of my boat under construction

When I got the first pics, I actually paused and thought, "Hmmm... wonder if I should ask them to add backing for ski pylon?" I think the backing was added in less than 30 mins after I brought it up.

When I was wondering about where to send the setback/jackplate, in less than an hour I knew when they needed it by and who should get it to their attention from FedEx and they'll credit me for the bracket they won't be using.

I've seen Checkmates all my life, and while it's old fashioned building to some degree (and I know the pros/cons of all types of construction), I know that the ones that are taken care of, especially the trailered boats, just go on and on, like classic 60's muscle cars.

I will add any pics that come along and I am encouraging them with "more is better!".

That is realy cool

Not a lot of companys that will let you in on build proses like that.

Cant tell from pics it the transom wood core.

Yeah it's a wood transom and fully balsa cored hull.

Cool pics Philster, keep them coming!

Re: Checkmate factory pics of my boat under construction

I am shocked they are still using wood for any thing. As most of the true inboard ski/wakeboard boats went full composite in the early '90's.

Then again dont know if they could get a full composite transom to hold that 300

Looks great looking forward to watching it progress.

Re: (Updated 1/6/2012) Checkmate factory pics of my boat under construction

Composites are finicky as to stresses & different vibration frequencies. The racing sailboaters do not like the instantainous BOOM of the main mast letting go at anytime with no warning. Same for some non racing masts.

Wood is good. VERY well known crushing limits. Absorbs vibrations well. Does not usually go BOOM without some indications ahead of time. Best indications are looseing bolts that need retightning. = crushing under excessive loads. Constant or peak loads.

Philster,

Awesome boat , keep those pics coming, it must be a great feeling to go around in your very own custom made boat. Your gonna have to post a video of the whole rig running out on the Chesapeake on it's maiden for us to admire.

Re: (Updated 1/6/2012) Checkmate factory pics of my boat under construction

A few responses up, I did put in my disclaimer of sorts about knowing the various types of boat building. There are various types of cores, composites, etc. The word composite and world of composites is fickle. Balsa core is a composite.

My Scarab is/was a composite hull, but more specifically a wood-free composite Dupont? product similar to Kevlar?. Now, mine held up great -- solid as a rock (although, I'd be wary of some Wellcrafts from the 90's). However, to get some of these wood-free composites to work, some are outfitted with extra foam or other cellular frankensteins that turn to mush, hold moisture (even the larger 21+ foot boats) and create conditions binding agents don't like. Well, I've seen wood-free composites with water logged foam and delamination and people stumped as how to fix these things and technologies ''borrowed from the aerospace industry'' (an actual quote from a large manufacturer).

Pros/Cons and debates rage on.

A builder who is doing what they do well and has mastered the art -- yes, the art -- is better suited to build me my ride than a company whose crack team of accountants bought into wood-free composites because the balance sheet showed they'd make a slightly better margin on them and they could cut staff, hire cheaper staff and make boats instead of hiring/keeping dedicated craftsmen who've mastered an art and come at a slightly higher price.

That being said...

From my youth on up to my ripe middle age of 44, Checkmates have been ubiquitous and seem to hold up very well. The key is that you don't start drilling into this or that, compromise the structure and leave it rotting somewhere (which is death to all boats).

It is a liner boat -- big plus. It will be a covered/trailered baby. I see a boat port going up soon (my materials list is growing).

I've weighed all the pros and cons. Love the convo though! If anyone were interested in an educational thread and we could ramble on about boat construction, sign me up to that thread.

Okay... back to business here: THANK YOU, everyone! Whatever I can post, I will! She'll look like a boat this week! The hull and deck will me married no later than Tuesday!
