Hello,
UPDATE (pictures below):

Thanks very much for your replies. We drove 70 miles today to look at boat/motor.

Turns out it's NOT oil injected. Owner (1 year) advises that in ran flawlessly, acheived 50mph in 17ft bass boat, but auto choke didn't work, used manual choke on engine.

He had a shop change plugs and bottom end oil, but other than that he's never had cover off. Motor has never seen salt, local small-water boat since new (tagged).

By the pictures - is it likely that this IS an 88-89-90 Yamaha? Autochoke non-operative something that should give us pause?

Owner is selling package below market value because it's middle of winter and it's sitting in his cottage's driveway. We feel we must act prior to season start as it will be sold be then - hence - we are considering a purchase with no leak-down, compression test. Seller is well-known member of community, we have reason to trust, still...

Any insight on the year/durability/autochoke would be very much appreciated (again!)

works great never breaks, if you suspect its been in saltwater carefully inspect the shift shaft, especially where its visible just above the gearcase. if its rusted into an hour glass shape it can be costly to replace.

I have a '89 115hp on my '76 Olympic ,it is a saltwater motor. The motor is as good as they come and better than most. I have never checked mileage [ha ha] but my GPS shows 36.5mph top speed with a 13x17(?) ss prop and 2 people ,38gals fuel, a 9.9 kicker and misc. gear in the boat. Check comp. with the throttle wide open, 120(+ -) would be a good number. Be sure you have water running to the motor when you do this, but I know you know that ,it is just a force of habit. good luck

It sure looks good. It not being oil injected surprises me. Get the numbers off of the tag on the side that you are not showing us and then call a Yamaha dealer. It is on the motor mount where the steering shaft comes out. The auto choke should not be too big a deal. Yamaha's web site has a parts guide as well as a 1-800 #. Give them a call. As far as durability "as good as any, better than most".

Had no problems with mine in the two years I have had it. Always starts first time even after standing for 6 months, though I do run it until the carbs are empty.

That may be a newer motor than the pictures show. The consumer line did not have oil injection and used the older model electrics and cowlings.

Re: UPDATED - PICTURES 1989 Yamaha 115 Advice please?

if its a C115 it was made with no oil injection and had a side mounted CDI until sometime in the mid ninties while the jet and precision blend shifted to the aft mounted CDI sometime earlier.
so if it has a preffix of C ie C115, it never had oil injection if it is a plain 115 it did have it.
the last alpha character will indicate year for US motors from 84-05.
so an electric start c model trim and remote with a 20" shaft would look like this, C115TLRF. the same engine with oil injection will be 115TLRF.
