I have a 1987 225 Johnson. I'm looking to get a 2000 motor or later. To replace the 87, I need help on deciding which brand. I'm new to boating. When I change to a newer motor do I have to change the engine controls, and if so what else do I have to change. Need help!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: upgrade motor

First question is "why" the new engine and what type of boat. You have more than just engine "brand" to consider. How did the existing engine perform? You may need more HP or you could get by with less. The existing engine is a 2-stroke. Do you want a 4-stroke or another 2-stroke. If it is a 2-stroke you want then Evinrude E-tec and Mercury OptiMax are your choices. If you want a 4-stroke Yamaha, Mercury and Suzuki are your choices. Price wise, the nod goes to Suzuki. If you change engine brands you need new controls. As a new boater I strongly advise that you obtain an "installed price" from wherever you buy the engine. This is not a job for a brand new boater.

Pretty good chance you're going to be replacing controls even if you go with a newer Johnson/Evinrude. I think they changed around '95 or thereabouts. I agree with Silvertip in that I'd like to know more about why you're considering repowering.
