Upgrade My Exhaust

I've tweaked out my inboard merc with a 4 barrel carb and electronic ignition. I gained approx 400 RPM and 'very' happy with those results.

After driving at WOT for a while, I blew apart the exhaust bellow off the manifold elbow which is not that old. Melted right through it. Obviosuly I'm putting some serious heat out the exhaust to melt the rubber. (yes lots of water is flowing)

Rather than replacing the bellow only to melt another, I think I'll put in a thru hull exhaust. I know it will be a little louder and that's ok.

I'm wondering if there will be any performance improvement? (I expect a little)

Does anyone have any advice on doing this? I don't think it will be hard to fabricate a thru hull exhaust w/a flapper but would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!
