Re: upgraded 4.3 Prop suggestion

I use Hiperformancetech in Regina for my engine rebuilding/performance needs, from experience I believe that the Saskatoon shops are only good enough for stock rebuilds or minor head repair. I haven't met anyone yet that has the extended knowledge and experience needed to build and recommend performance parts.

I bought this boat from a private sale and long story short, I ended up with 4 cracks in the block. The previous owner did a good job of changing the oil right before I got there and cleaned the oil cap so I couldn't tell there was a water leakage problem when I bought it. Due to the damage done I needed a longblock. I priced out a few marine blocks and bugged my buddy Sheldon, he told me he had a recipe engine that he builds for a bit more than a stock rebuild. That's why I have the engine I built. It's been a pain getting everything working properly, but I hope in the end I will be able to tell you the actual performance I get out of it. I have only had 3/4 throttle due to improper throttle cable installation by the local boat shop among other things...

My lil v6 like the fuel as much as a v8 i think?????

That's how it works....40 mph requires X hp, meaning Y fuel, no way around that...

Why don't you start a new thread, give us some details on your setup, and lets discuss some options...

Re: upgraded 4.3 Prop suggestion

I took the boat out for a good cruise and did some testing. I am having issues now when giving the boat quick throttle stabs, it bogs and even backfires once. It runs fine as long as I give it a gradual throttle increase, but when I get to 75% throttle or more it bogs down and the rpms actually drop. If I let off it will pick back up and clean up. I can't get more than 4000rpm out of it under load. It idles and starts fine especially when cold, but needs to be cranked twice once warm to start.

I have changed secondary jets on the Edelbrock 1409 carb from the 1485 calibration to 0.095 and then went back down to 0.089 with little to no difference.

Do you think I have a problem with my accel pump? Maybe I damaged it when I changed the jets?

Re: upgraded 4.3 Prop suggestion

Just as a follow up to maybe help others. I got rid of my issue by taking my one year old 1409 carb off and cleaning it with carb cleaner.

I am now running my old 21 pitch 3 blade prop to 46-4700 rpm and 42-43mph. I thought I would have more power and speed with the new motor... Maybe timing and fuel are a bit off. I ended up with going to 0.092 secondary jets.

I am going to switch out the 80lb nauticus sx trim tabs for 60lb ones as well.

I exchanged my 23pitch 3 blade Merc Blackmax prop for a 21 Pitch 4 Blade Hustler prop.

Anyone try out the 4 Blade Hustler Prop yet?

Twothings going on here...props and jetting...maybe timing...:D...Maybe a thread in the i/o section...There are some very good minds in there....As to propping your more than probably going to have to go with two props...One for water sports and one for playing @ speed..

Umm by the way what dist you using and how did you set your base timing..

Re: upgraded 4.3 Prop suggestion

I think I have the jetting down.

Timing I want to recheck soon, if my carb wasn't set right, I can bet that my timing wasn't set right. I will have to get my own timing gun so I can take it to the lake and set it in the water.

The local prop guy had some interesting things to say about the Rubex 4 or Amita 4 vs the Turning Point Hustler 4 blade. The fact that there are 2 'cleaver' style blades and 2 regular style blades makes it interesting design approach.

I had heard that a 4 blade hustler was coming, but still not on their website - I guess you are the guinea pig.

Love to see a pic or two.

I am sure it will be more than a couple weeks before I can hit the water.

Re: upgraded 4.3 Prop suggestion

Couple years later and a bit smarter. With the factory two barrel carb and a bit advanced timing. I have just run the boat to 50.2mph (GPS verified) @ 4700 rpm and more trim to go on the 4 blade Turning Point hustler 21 pitch prop.
