Upgraded from 2 stroke to 4 stroke Yamaha, need guages

After many years and thousands of hours, I had to say goodbye to my '98 Yamaha 115. I've recently hung a 2006 Yamaha F115 4 stroke. I plugged my wiring into the "new" motors 10 pin harness and it fired right up. However, my 1998 6Y5 tachometer isn't communicating with the motor very well. My existing gauge is digital, but with only 2 switches or "dips" inside. I've been told that I need to replace the tachometer and probably run some wiring to the motor or use some type of adapter. I am currently using the existing harness from the helm back to the motor. Any advice on how to achieve what I'm looking for. I don't want to put it in the water until I know that I have functioning temp alarm, low oil pressure alarm and a tilt gauge would be very nice, but not entirely necessary. And yes, I'm a boater on a budget! The two things don't seem to go together though.

Now you need to decide what sort of instrumentation that you want?

Analog needle and dial. Analog with digital display. Digital with digital display. Yamaha brand or non Yamaha brand?

I have 1998 version digital Yamaha 6Y5 Speedometer and tachometer. When my alarm sounds, I have 4 "icons" at the bottom of the tachometer. They are for low oil in main tank, low oil in remote tank (obviously no longer needed) oil pressure and overheat. When the alarm goes off a light comes on over one of those little icons to tell me what the alarm is all about. So, I assume that there is some relationship between between the tachometer and the alarm system. Also, I have a trim gauge on my current tachometer, and I'd like for that to work too. If it weren't for those icons, how would you know why the alarm is going off?

The gauge you have does not indicate low oil pressure. Oil quantity indications only.

Yes, the tachometer will tell you what the alarm is about. Low oil quantity in a two stroke and low oil pressure in a four stroke. And over temperature in both two and four strokes. But it in no way affects the alarm system from working. Many don't use a Yamaha gauge that provides that functionality.

If the alarm sounds in a boat that has no Yamaha tachometer to tell them what the alarm is for, they investigate. First check the oil tank for quantity. If the quantity if right then check the cylinder head for temperature.

You can get an updated version of your tachometer that will work with your four stroke model. Or you can install a Yamaha analog tachometer that has two lights. One for low oil pressure and one for over temperature.

The trim/oil harness for your existing tachometer will work with a newer four stroke but an adapter harness will be needed.

Okay, I've attached a picture of my gauge and the little "icons". The description says the images are for "overheat", "low oil level in main tank", "low oil level in remote tank" and some sites say the little oil can is to indicate low oil level in a 4 stroke, but others say it indicated low oil pressure in a 4 stroke. An oil can to me would indicate low oil level but either way it seems to be for a 4 stroke based on what the other "icons" are for. Also, the newer digital gauges with only 2 pictures also have 2 buttons. Do you know what those are for? Also, any idea what the adapter to make my gauge work with the 4 stroke is called, or is the adapter only for upgrading to a newer tachometer. Sorry to bombard you with questions, but I'm much more familiar with the mechanics than with the electrical on these new 4 strokes.
