upgrading a 78 mercury 800

hello forum I am new here and from what i already see this will be a treasure house of info and help. My name is Roger .

I would like to know if it is possible to upgrade an older motor. to newer specs.

i have gotten a motor that needs to have a new distributor cap and wiring redone . for the most part a complete overhaul.( not just a tuneup) i think it will be worth the time and investment , because the compression seems to be very strong . have already tried to put a band aide (lol) with out success. So if i am going to pursue this i would like to upgrade if possible

What do you want to upgrade??? Also its not a 1978 if it has a distributor cap...

well i thought it was a 78. if not how do i find out what it is .
i must inform you i know little about them , but will have some help when i am ready . i am simply researching , exploring my options .

as far as the upgrade i hope i can go a way from the dist cap .

The engines with a dist. (Battery CD) are a different block than the ADI engines.

Serial Number Question/Help since starting this thread i now need to ask again how to determine the year of the motor , so i can find out my options in improving the motors electrical system either by replacing all with original but new wiring or by upgrading to later tech-knowledge . I dont know where to look on motor for the number. the only no. i have found is ser. 2990270 which was located on a part of the tilt bracket .
