Hello,
I have a 1981 Searay Seville. 305 (228 MIE) engine. I recently replaced the external gimbal housing because I broke the old one trying to remove the lower steering pin. I replaced it with a used housing. It appeared that this was the same as the unit I removed as it had the offset bolt pattern for the y-pipe. My old y pipe is the 3 piece with the flappers in the bottom (wonderful design!) and has 5 bolt holes. The newer unit has offset pattern but only 4 holes. I learned thanks to the forums that this is because it is a newer design (1983 I believe). So I found and ordered a compatible y pipe (with the flappers on top!).

My question is, I have not installed this yet but comparing it to my old y-pipe it looks as though the ends of the pipes that hook up to the riser tube are a few inches further forward than the old. The engine is not in yet as I am doing some cleaning/painting. The manifolds I have are the older log style with the elbow riser at the rear. I am assuming that this manifold will not work with this newer y-pipe. Do I need to replace the manifolds with a center riser or will this somehow work?

BTW about 10 years back, I acquired a project boat, knowing nothing about boats (I knew engines). rotted deck/stringers/engine issues. Thanks to this forum mainly and some You Tube videos, I have learned enough to do everything I need to know about my boat. Dave

Thank you for the quick response Bondo! I am also assuming that I need a different thermostat housing/hoses too? I thought I remembered reading somewhere that there was an advantage to having the center riser vs the log style. Do you know if that is the case and if so why?

You have a couple choices, this is what you have now

GM 228 cooling.jpg

You can either go for the next up grade which went to center risers and uses warm manifold setup. Or

GM 228R cooling.JPG

The new style (V6 but same for V8) which are cool manifolds.

V6 Open cooling.jpg

Basically the newer style allows excess water not needed for the motor to go thru the manifold and out the riser. The warm manifold keeps the manifolds at about the same temp as the engine block. If it were mine I would go newer style, its simpler and has less issues. The warm style uses check balls in the water flow to keep exhaust full

New thermostat part number is 806235A1 and its no longer made by Merc but others make them. After market is also good for this item

Alldodge - Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you. Guess this is going to cost me a lot more than I originally planned!
