Had my first blunder with my boat. Driving down the road and one of my cushions flew out. Part of the upholstery was torn. Is there anything that can be done without having to re-upholster the whole cushion? Maybe some type of patchwork can be done?

Nice work . . . :p You could stich a patch and sort of make it look like it was meant to be that way.

I'd try a fabric shop for a scrap of vinyl, etc.

if the tear faces towards the inside of the seat (hidden from view) and you are not worried about cosmetics, then just apply a vinyl or "pleather" patch the same color as your material.

Just bite the bullet and get it fixed. How much could one cushion cost. Do you cheap out on your other boat repairs? Not a good habit.

im sorry......i totally agree with this post.....the seat cushon will cost 40 bux....any band aid, plus travel time and putzing time....will cost more.

if you want to wait.....white duct tape will keep it from spreading

Re: Upholstery help

As an upholsterer, I can tell you that any "patch work" will look exactly like that...patchwork.

I'm unable to tell the size of the cushion by the pics, but if it's a jumpseat, I'm assuming it's in the 18"x18" - 22"x22" range. With standard white marine vinyl and reusing the hidem that is stapled to the bottom, you can get it totally recovered in the neighborhood of $50-$75.

Just get it fixed the proper way. You'll be happier in the long run. While you're there, have them put 1" white webbing on the bottom with a snap in the boat to keep it from flying out again.

The cushion is about 14"x20" or so. The bad tear is on the outside and can be seen. I think I will just patch it up right now and have it completely re-done in the offseason.

Fireman - I have straps that button the cushion to the bench/enginehatch. Is that what you are refering to? I was recommended not to tow with seats buttoned in...to remove for transport. IMO it looks like they should be fine at speed....heck, boat will 51mph with them in!

Trim were yours buttoned in? Or just laying there?

That's exactly what I'm referring to. They always recommend to remove for transport. It's a CYA thing. .Some people would tow their boat at 90 MPH if they could. Snaps are generally OK, but I prefer to use 'lift-a-dot' fastners or 1/4 turn retainers.

You know, I'm not completely sure if it was snapped down. I would guess it wasn't. The thing that got me was I was only going about 40mph.
