Upholstery Removal Help

I'm taking the cushions off my 2000 Sea Ray 270 Sundancer to have them re-upholstered and am having trouble with the angled backrest. The cushion is bolted to the fiberglass and the only way to get at the bolts requires removing an interior panel. My question: Is there anyway to remove the interior panel without destroying it or am I going to have to replace that also?

Yes, you can remove it without destroying it, but it isn't easy. Many people simply yank the cushion off and replace the wood back of the cushion, then reinstall using Velcro. This has the advantage that the cushions can then be removed for cleaning. Look in the folds/creases for the panel mounting screws. You'll also have to carefully peel the foam backing off the fiberglass and re-attach using 3m spray adhesive.

I like the yank it off and re-install with Velcro idea. Keeps me from making this job more difficult!

I talked to the guy doing my upholstery and he didn't think that velcro was strong enough to keep the cushion from blowing off. Any experience in this working?

The side panels on my boat are attached with parts similar to these. Mine are a lot longer and are held in place by the plywood the panels are attached to. Might work in your situation.

That cushion in your photo won't experience that much wind in the cockpit. Velcro is surprisingly strong in my experience. It's (relatively) cheap and easy to try out. I'd run two strips of the low profile stuff down the long axis of the cushion (on either side) and give it a whirl. You can always drill holes later.
