Upholstery screw issue with Bayliner

I am re-upholstering my Bayliner and to take off my side panels I had to tear into the upholstery to get at the screws. Every screw was under the upholstery and under the foam (wood screws). I was wondering how they installed these panels with the screws being where they are. The panel upholstery was stapled from behind, as normal, and the screws where not near creases of any kind. So how did they do it? I will be installing the wood bolts that dig into the wood from on side, same as my rear seat back rests.

What year/model?

I reuphostered a late 80's 195 and the screws were all put in between the vinyl panels, if you are really persistant you can find them all and remove them without tearing up the uphostry. That was how everything but the front pads were put in. Those were actually screwed in from behind and required a screwdiver bit in a ratchet wrench to remove.

Re: Upholstery screw issue with Bayliner

I finished the work a few weeks ago, boat is now in the water. The job came out pretty good but alot of work. The wood screws were behind the upholstery and the only way to take them out was to tear it apart and re-upholster which I was going to do anyway, so I did. I really can't see how they got them on there unless they had a way to screw the wood screws on then fold the upholstery over and staple from the bottom. Wood screws were BEHIND the upholstery, no way of getting at them without removing the uphostery first. I used 2 sided screws to put it back together so that I could wood screw them to the panel then use nuts on the other end and I 3M glued the other wood screw end to the panel for extra strength. Now I can remove them easy since I used wing nuts on most.

been a while since i took some panels off my '72 trisonic. but if i remember right. it had a machine screw under the vynil. the studs were showing out the back of the panel. the panel nutted on from the back side of the glass on the boat. seems like the machine screws were not normal screw heads too, maybe flat or had a couple spikes on them to have them dig into the wood side panel itself, so it wouldn't spin when attaching the nuts.... best i can do. and i could be wrong, it's been years since i took it apart. but that's my recollection..

My Bayliner (pictured below) , had the same set up. There were machine screws under the foam of the upholstery. The higher ones were a PITA to get to the nuts. I believe they must have had to send the screws through the fiberglass , start the nuts by hand ,spin them down and grab the long end of the screw with pliers to hold the screw as the nut was tightened. Pretty much what I had to do to remove them , but in reverse...lol. A few WERE in seams , but not all. I removed the screws after I had removed the panels.

All I am going to say is that they were NORMAL wood screws and they were screwed in from the front. No way of getting at them but to tear the upholstery apart, NO NUTS, NOT BOLDS, NO NUTS, NO BOLTS, nothing between seams or anything like that just wood screws and I know what a wood screw is and looks like, I have many boxes of them. Again, Philips head wood screws.

Tommy - same deal in my boat. I'm re-upholstering my old 89' capri and all the panels were screwed in like you said. Definitely makes it a bit more tedious to say the least! Any way you can post a pic of your new installation? Sounds like you came up with a pretty good re installation procedure.
