I know this has probably been beaten to death, however I am still finding conflicting information on the oil seal placement in the upper housing. To make sure I am on the same wave length here I will state the following from my understanding of past threads:

1 - The oil seals have a "lip" whereby one can clearly see a retainer spring inside.
2 - The "top of the housing" is that part attached with four bolts (3/8 inch - 12 point socket required to remove)

In the manual previously posted by I believe "Bondo", Link - https://doc-0g-40-docs.googleuserco...TjhfOVRUNEk0anBUR3lQYTkwcUh5RElUQQ?e=download

In Section 3A, Page 28/29, paragraphs 14 & 15 it states the oil seals are to have the "lips" facing up, specifically on para 15 it states towards the "top of housing".

Now for the conflicting information as posted on YouTube video by "Wayne Coll" of Stern Drive in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCyEW9GQFDA - specifically starting at 09:15 of the video it says to install the lower seal with the spring facing the installer. (It does not clearly show the installed seal for the upper - I cannot see the spring itself)

Please could someone clarify. Again I apologize if this has been made clear before, but I just cannot find it.

(With no ice I really should be out on the water :grumpy:)

You wont actually see the spring. the video shows it was installed wrong (flange visable) . correctly installed you will see the rubber of the seal. the rubber or spring side faces up toward the top of the drive

Download the correct copy of the service manual for your outdrive and engine, they will have pics to show proper installation beside all the good and correct information you will ever need. I downloaded mine on my thumb drive and just print out any pages I find I need.

Airshot - I do have the copy downloaded, as per the link supplied by "Bondo" in another thread. Point I am trying to make and asking is that on the video (by a supplier of Mercruiser parts) is that he shows the lower oil seal to be installed with the "lip" facing away from the "top of the housing".

BT Doctur thank you for clarifying.

Sorry, but first timer here too. So stated another way, after installing both the upper and lower seals you should be able to see the spring/lip?
