The upper crankshaft seal on my 84 9.9 is leaking. The manual says that special tool p/n 391060 is needed to remove/install this seal. The cost of the tol is $231.00. Does anyone out there know of a cheaper tool to remove the seal (under flywheel)?

'preciate any help
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Upper crankshaft seal

Without pulling to halves apart and replacing it, guessing that you could put 2 machine screws of the appropriate size into the seal, one on each side and pull it up with a pair of plyers. Install, find a piece of pipe the same diameter as the seal and use it to seat the seal, tap it in gently, greasing the outside of the seal will help.

Never done it this way on that motor , did the 2 halves approach but i've read of people using the screw approach to change seals.

Yes, it's not hard to do. No need for a special tool...

in my experience the lower seal usually goes bad first... I'd be replacing them both.

Just don't try to pry it out. That thin crankcase lip is easy to break.
