Upper drive shimming?

Hi

I've split my stern drive and had to take a look at the gears because of water in the bellows. All looks ok but the Clymer manual says that if the Drive Gear assembly has been removed and the drive lid has been removed, when re assembling both need to be checked with shimming tools.

I can understand that if I was rebuilding the gears they would have to be shimmed because they are pre loaded, but if this has been done once, do you guys think it necessary to check it upon re assembly?

No, you don't have to re-shim just because you removed the cap, and why are you believing anything you read in a crappy aftermarket, clymers manual.
Here's a a link to download the OEM manual for your outdrive, free.

Post what engine you have and the serial number, and we can get you a manual for it too.
